Does anybody have any idea when last anybody caught yellowtail (of the shore) in Simonstown?

Eish you better read up on Histamine Fish Poisoning then - hope you did not eat if, and if you did, I hope you are alright!

"Food safety has become a major topic for public policy. One of the principal seafood safety hazards, as well
as being a significant trade issue, is histamine fish poisoning). Histamine fish poisoning is a foodborne
chemical intoxication caused by the consumption of bacterially contaminated fish, particularly when fish are
not kept chilled or frozen. The key to its prevention is the rapid cooling of fish after catching, with initial
cooling specifically important, especially when temperature rises at a later stage. In SA, S. lalandi has been
identified as the primary fish species posing a HFP risk for consumers."

Thanks SeanT. I assume this was near Redhill Road/Main Rd? I'm keen on spinning for Yellotail, but I have no idea best conditions to try in. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey Guys

They hooked 4 yellowtail last week in Simonstown. You are right about where to go, park your car just off the main road up towards red hill. Walk down the slope over the road and train line. The yellowtail usually travel from right to left there.

The water has been very clear this summer and warm but the quantity of fish has been to a minimum. As long as the wind is not too strong and your can get your plug or spinner out , go for a throw.

Its very difficult at sunrise as you are throwing blind ( The sun is coming up and you cant spot the fish ) I prefer the late afternooon into the evening as you can see better with your polorised glasses.

Cheers

i know exactly were u talking about ive hooked tail there before but "other fishermen" cast their spoons and plugs carelessly which made me lose some good fish

Not to butt in, but this is irresponsible. I fish the battery all the time and have a contact who goes EVERY day. Not one fish has been landed there since November, which I caught.

Lol!!!!!

One must never forget to take the bulldust factor into account when it comes to fishing reports.

Call me sceptical, cynical and old, but I take a lot of what I hear with a big pinch of salt especially when it comes to info thats not firsthand.

But, there again, who knows?

I am really not trying to be a stickler here, but next thing there will be 20 palookas with coffee grinders trying to catch a yellowtail. The Battery does produce the odd fish, but to say 4 fish came out last week, when I was personally there 4 days and the other 3 were blown out, is just crap!

True, nothing ventured....I am not trying to put anyone off, but the truth is that is a spot where you have to put in many hours and even days before you even see a single fish. There is one guy who has fished it every single day since early September and has not even had a chase...The guys on this site make it sound like you can pull in, have a few throws and leave with a fish.

Its true. The battery is not a spot that produces regularly. You really have to be dedicated and put the time in, a lot of time, and when the fish do happen to come past, its only for a couple of minutes. Then you have to be on your game.

Its been very quiet there this season. There certainly has'nt been much fish in the area, not even the trekkers at Fish Hoek have had much off the shore.

400kg trekked at Fish Hoek the WHOLE season...not that I am too upset by that, better than 30 tonnes...

Couldn't agree with your sentiments about the Battery more, hence my difficulty in believing that 4 fish came out there last week...

Anybody care to venture guess as to why the yellowtail have not come into the bay in any numbers this season, and seem to be stuck in the SW reef area.

Yesterday the water was 19 deg at Simonstown and the colour looked ok, but no sign of fish.

On average over the last few weeks, the water temperature outside the point has been a couple of degrees cooler than in the bay, and there is a lot of bait fish, may-be thats the clue.

Been dismal inside the Bay indeed...my theory for what its worth is the absence of true SE winds - there has been so much S and SSE wind, strange...we have hardly even seen fish at Battery and it is nearly Feb. Lets hope its still coming!
