I have alos been practising my casting the last two months and was suprised what distances you can actually cast with medium budget rods.
With the 12ft VXR DFistance rods I comfortably cast between 100 - 110mtrs, I use budget reels as well. Okuma Longbow 650 II.
I agree you need the right tool for the job, but for me just starting out in competitive angling, they will do just fine.
I walked it out with my line meter, so I hope that it is accurate LOL

I also use the strongbow 11 reels, I have Elbe 12ft carp hunters and just cant get pass the 130m mark. Just joined a angling club and the woman cast like 134m geez, thats why I needed the new rods lol. Ill be more than happy if I can get up to 160m mark with the new Sensation 13ft Rockets. Also using 7lb xx line instead of 10lb, so Im very confident Ill reach my mark ::S

The next step is going over to 5lbs line. It makes n huge diffirence on those long casts and even 5m can make or break a session.

i appreciate the fact that you say you measured it ..

i find it annoying when people claim 140 or 150 when in reality they are just at the 110 meter mark..

My rule is.. you cast.. you reel our all the slack and then you attach the line meter and measure..

or when you at a field.. you can use a meter they use in land surveying.. (with the wheel) and in my mind the most accurate way to measure the good old 150Mter tape..

as i said in an earlier post.. hit the clip at 158 .. bu i know there is a bow .. of at least 30 meter even on a windless day this is aggressive.

so in my mind.. experince.. dont over estimate.. rather under..

someone told me about the counting while sinker is airborne.. this has it flaws as a sinker can go straight up for ten seconds and only land 10 meters away..

anyhoo..

all i can say is that it is important.. to get accuracy.. and consistency.. have seen it again .. I hit the spot of about 110 and got my fish.. when i went deeper . .nada..

good luck .. all ..

ps. What is an appropriate punishment if your penmaat misses your 4 kilo carp by stepping on your line.. ??c

anyhoo..

Gertus. Just go to any rugby field and cast from the try-line and try to hit the other try-line (100m). Soon you will be standing on the deadline and hitting the other deadline (at least 110m), with M1 and bomb. And you will realise that it wasn't that difficult. And then you start aiming at the fence behind the deadline and in no time at all hitting that fence is a piece of cake (unless the fence is more than 20m behind the deadline). And then you realise you forgot the Rockets at home and you did all this with the 12' sensations you wanted to sell to some random stranger because you didn't like using them...

naruto.. i dont have a problem getting 110 and your advice is something to try.. this will make people realise their real ability so that they do not live in a sense of illusion ..

When we presented the casting clinic we used a sureveor (wheel) meter.. and measured the distance at 110 for the field we were on .. and with Smitty's rods (braid leader and 5lb line i did not even strain to get 110  as i was afraid of cutting my finger on the braid..

i i hear guys getting 130 with okuma lucky packet rods... I would like them to come and coach me..

Gertus 100%. As I always say "Om te Meet is om te Weet"

Traditionally this whole casting thing rears it's head through the winter but normally a lot later.

We hold winter Bol and Kol Gooi leagues where standard feed is issued and a M1 is issued. 3 casts and the best cast counts.

My average over 3 comps was 142m and the single best cast was 172m. The casts have to be in a 24 degree V and are measured on the center line and not where the sinker hit the line (rewarding straight casts)

Jacques Fouche averaged 161m for the one tournament. Measurement is per tape down the center line with the tape starting at 100m, short of 100m counts as a No cast.

Having this as a league series helps to keep the skills fresh as required to fish well.

That said the comp places more emphasis and points on accuracy casting:

30pts on 60m
60pts on 80m
90pts on 100m

180 points so with top points there and with average distances in the distance casting being between 115-125m high accuracy beats out a single long range cast

i would like to join something like this craig.. beam me up !!! this is there your game really improves..

distance is nothing unless you can do it over and over..

i think i will start wiht 90 and then work my way up..

I am thinking of even marking a local dam with 3 - 4 markers at 100 120 140 and 160 and practice on them.. when the wind blows... ..

cuz we practice in good weather.. but often fish in wind..

I used to do the Defence force one May was intro then tournament was June, July and Aug at the sport grounds of Airforce base Waterkloof

Gauteng North holds an actual league in this in all the different categories (Snr, Jnr, Penkop, Ladies, Masters etc)

They normally hold it at the Defence Sport Club sport fields in Thaba Tswane (Voortrekker hoogte)

They guys put a lot of time and effort into preparing for this as there is prestige and medals on hand and it's always the guys who cast accurately on the kolgooi and then get a good or above average cast on the distance.

Seldom that the top distance casters win the comp

Ok, so I went to get my Rockets today. Was very excited and the rod felt good in my hands. Then I had a glimpse at the WAFT rods, wow, they felt even better and more balanced but, bit pricey for me. Then I was shown the diff between chinese and Japanese imports. They guy took 5lb line, pulled it trough the 1st eye of the Rocket and took the line in both hands, then started to pull hard back and forth, at about the 5th pull the line snapped?? Did the same with Shimano, Diawa, same result. Then we tested the black Mamba, I stopped counting after 20 pulls, line never burned or broke! Big quality diff.

I still took the Rocket 13ft and when I was about to pay, I saw a new Rocket behind the counter broken in 2 pieces! I asked what the .... happened? He said it broke casting! and its not the only 1, they have another 1 that broke near the end of the tip! Neadless to say this got me worried!!!

End of story, I negotiated a better price and took the Black Mamba 13ft 3.5lb. Went to my local dam to have a gooi! I used to get about 20m short of the opposite bank with my 12ft Elbe's. My 1st gooi with the same weight I used on my Elbe I cleared the dam and my weight were stuck in the reeds...lol.

So immidiatly my distance improved, not to sure about the distance as I didn't have my counter with me. I luv the Black Mamba, the feel, balance, looks and overall performance. Going to the Vaal on Monday for 3 days, will see how it handles the big Carps!

Good for you iggy ..
About a minth Ato i Cast with the rockets and i Heard a Snap.. Looked and SAW nothing ... Contínued to Cast and Heard Another crack.. Toit the tip off and had a look.. The top piece had a lateral crack where it goes in the bottom .. So tooi it to Western accesories..
They die not want to replace immediataly so i had to purchase Another tip.. After Month i go back to ASK what sensation rep SAID.
The girl at the counter SAID she does not think they wil replace it .. Cus in her EXPERIENCe that looked like a crush. And not a Factory fault ..

I am pissed and will never but Another sensation Product again ... I called Zain from sensation still waiting for his call ...

So i hope waft gives u a better service ...
