Daiwa Monstermesh, sad case!!!

Hi there.

Well today I decided to set the drag on my stella 8000 and daiwa monstermesh (model which can handle 9kg drag it says.)

So I took 5 kg of weights tied it to the line and tried to pick it up. Seeing it had a drag of 9kg a 5kg drag would seem fair.

Pulled it up and WHAM brand new rod broke between 2nd and 3rd guide. mors af.

Did I do something wrong. WHAT WAS THAT. My R900 rod snapped.

Daiwa common guys its way below the rating.

take it in to be repaired...if they can it might be a slight wek spot or if possible try get a new tip for the rod, might cost you a bit but it could also cost you the fish of your dreams! my 2c

That's sad dude.
Rods can be repaired, you can do it yourself if you like.
Get to a hardware and buy a dowel (hardwood) that will fit tight into the smaller diameter. Simply use some epoxi resin to to glue it in. Then add some binding min 30mm each way of the brake and rod varnish. Make sure you have about 100mm of dowel in each side with plenty epoixi. Or take it to the tackle shop, they should be able to do it.
The fact is though it won't be as strong as it was before.

The same happened to me a few months ago...I bought a daiwa dropshot rod and used a lighter weight and the rod snapped above the join.I took it to the shop I bought it and the owner refused to replace but said he can fix it.I explained to him but he was not interested so I too it to the kingfisher in Durban since they are the Daiwa agents and when I spoke to the salesman about the incident he said not to worry and replaced the rod....suggest you take it to the outlet where you purcahsed it and explain as to what happened...the Daiwa agent told me that the rod could have fell in the shop and could have had a weak spot...they would inspect the rod and maybe replace....try the shop and maybe go my route....

Guys, too often you hear about rods breaking like that. Most often it happens when "testing" your new rods. Fact is the rod butt is held on the hip then to get height, the tip is lifted forcing the rod to bend backwards breaking it. This is evidant of it breaking near the tip, usually between the second and third or fourth eye. If it breaks in the back, I suspect a defect but not necessarily near the tip. It is the back of the rod that has the pulling power when fighting a fish not the tip.
Ianzo, it is worth your while to check with the supplier though, but I wouldn't expect a hell of a lot of sympathy from them.

A tip when "testing" your rod or reel drag. Attach a scale to your bumber and line. Stand away, probably 5m then put force on it like as if fighting a fish. Have your buddy or wife look at the scale to give you the read out.

Ian, in NZ it is usual to return the busted rod to the original retailer and scream WARRANTY! The store and importer will decide whether your claim is legit or not. Do not under any circumstances attempt to have it "repaired" until you have exhausted all avenues for a warranty replacement. Be very careful with rods that state these sort of drag figures. Only Jigging Master can dry lift the quoted figures. BTW 9kg drag/lift is sweet FA!

Big ups to the Boks who cleaned up the Pom last weekend. Massive score to show those Poms how we play rugby in the Southern Hemisphere.

Ianzo - Sounded like there miht well be a defect, unless you high sticked the rod.... most rods "Drag rating" is to be taken at a max of 45 degrees..... if you go higher than this, the less pressure you can put, although modern jigging and popping rods have huge toleraces in this regard, they defintely are not indestructible.... and as Chris says, 9 kilos is not a huge amount for a max rating, but its plenty... the rod should defintely have handled i so long as you didn't high stick or jerk it.... or have the weight at your feet...

Take it back to the dealer, and see what you can do...

no i planned it perfectly and the rod was about on 40 degrees, I didin't even lift it of the ground and it went.

Ian... reckon you got unlucky bud. Used and abused my MonsterMesh rods (Jigging and popping rods) big time in Ras Mbisi/Kilwa. In fact, famous GT Skipper James Taylor was so impressed with the performance of the rods, when he found out how cheap they were, he BOUGHT them off me!
