CUBERA SNAPPERS

This is not a really a fishing report, just sharing with you guys

I've been feeling stressed the last couple of weeks, unfortunatly the weather at the weekends in Luanda has been lousy and because of that I haven't been in the water for more than a month now.

Looked at the weather and wave forecast for wednesday and decided to take a day off from work, talked with the guys to come along and here is the result:

These Cubera Snappers are brutes, even with heavy tackle, high drag, 120 pound braided line, steel leaders, they manage to cut you off (shallow water and rocks).

Lost several fights to these demons yesterday, one of them almost took all the line from my reel before breaking the line off in the rocks.

Got home tired and with backache, but slept like a baby and today I feel my stress went off.

Much better than going to the doctor and having a couple of sleeping pills.

Sorry guys, but I needed to share this medicine :)

Awesome report there, i wish that we got those snappers where we are working off the coast of Luanda, we a bit too far offshore though (around 120 miles)

Not very far from you (you're at block 17 I think), you have them, only near shore, Nzeto river mouth.

Need to talk to you, to get some info on best season for Tuna over there.

i am sure that you are a lot shallower than us, we are in 1400m of water, as for the tuna season.... they are there all year round, but there have been less and less Yellowfin over the last year or so but the Big eye tuna are always there, but always plenty of Dorado and Wahoo!

is it just me or are the two last fish different species? other than the obvious colour difference, check the anal fins.

Aqua,

You've got an eye for this things, the last two are Cuberas the first two I don't really know the name in english (Dogtooth ? ).
The last one is really the typical example of the Cuber Snapper that we call here "Pargo Mulato".

Nepps,

A BIG Cubera on jigs is also still a dream for me, haven't found deep spots with cuberas here in Luanda, usually I get them in shallow rocky waters near the coast so the only option is trolling or in one of the spots that is 15 meters deep popping

Shore Casting is also an option, the cubera on the next photo was caught here in Angola in 2003 at Longa river mouth by Mr. Eric Le Guyader, and this is really a BIG ONE

I guess I'll just have to catch my own so I can inspect them up close!

Do you guys ever get big groupers/rockcods while trolling so shallow? Wondering if it'll be worth trying to troll our local shallow reefs . . .
