controversial topic - Fishing licences

There is poll currently running on Sealine if we would contribute money towards preventing Fishing Trawlers

I pose the following controversial topic - Fishing licences - what is happening to that money - what are we paying for.

I have a fishing licence one for cast net and one for collecting bait and it is a couple of Rand a year and then I go to Transkei and Kwazulu Natal and see all these poachers and " Stroppers" people harvesting the shore not for consumption - bags of mussels and abalone and you name it - and it just grates me seeing this or read the following

A government patrol ship that cost taxpayers millions has been controversially auctioned off to a businessman for the price of a car. The 50m-long Eagle Star fetched just R302 738 at a public auction attended by only two bidders, despite being worth between R5-million and R10-million. The sale has raised questions in Parliament by the Democratic Alliance and been probed by the Department of Environmental Affairs’ Marine and Coastal Management division, which stands accused of wasting millions of taxpayers’ rands. Minister of Environmental Affairs Marthinus van Schalkwyk has joined the fray, claiming the ship was obsolete and needed to make way for new patrol vessels. In a written reply to questions in Parliament, Van Schalkwyk confirmed the department had sold the vessel after spending R1.5-million converting it from a fishing trawler into a patrol training ship and using it over four years — at a total operating cost of R35.7-million. The department has bought four new patrol vessels for R500-million but does not have the budget to deploy them properly. Most of the time they gather seagulls in Cape Town harbour.

plus the guy that bought it - got just about a full tank of diesel which if sold could repay more than have his purchase price

I Posted a similar letter but it was removed not to long ago:crazy1. If you come down to Richards Bay I will take you on a Sat or on a Sun to our ledges and you can witness the harvesting of our marine life!!:headb
They bring shovels with and begin scraping the mussels off the rocks!! ANY SIZE GO's We pay for I fishing license and follow the law but the new SA :sagives certain people more rights than others!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why must we pay and the rest can do as they please? WRONG OR RIGHT??
 
Where is the parks board to stop them??
 
My opinion and mine alone! Just telling it straight.

My question is not whether not to pay Licence fees but what is the government doing with the money they are making - is it being used to educate or improve fishing community or is it being used to finance frivolous expenses

I agree with the statement that all animals are equal on the farm some just more than others....

and in the same instance I have seen fisherman support the poachers or Strippers by buying under size lobster for bait.

This to me is an excellent topic for debate.I agree with what you guy's are saying,but what are we going to do about it is what im asking?Is there anything that we can do?considering the SA that we live in now.

I have seen this happen myself in Transkei,St Lucia,Cape Vidal which is a marine Reserve and it never siezes to amaze me that nothing but nothing is done about it.It seems that all our complaints just seem to fall by the way side.I have on a number occations posed the question to our so called parks board officals.One such occation was at St Lucia about a year ago,We were fishing the beach and the shad were on the bite.In that small town news spreads like wild fire,anyway we were all catching shad and there were a few locals including a native lady who were not fishing for shad but were fishing in the then closed mouth.She hooked into a kob which i estimate to have been at least 40kg.We were told that any kob that were caught in the estuary were to be release and this was said to us by the parks board.THe lady and the couple of her family who were with her then proceede to run with this huge fish gaffed towards the ocean,and then to my amazment they doubled back towards the car park.I then turned and asked the parks board what was happening and he simply said they caught their food for a month.

Wow my question is how do the parks board know that they are going to eat that fish and not sell it,and who are they to judge who needs the fish more us or the locals,how do they know that we didnt need food for a month.It goes to show there is no justice with these guy's.I also then proceeded to ask him if had checked their licenses because i noticed that they only checked the out of towners,they seemed to know the locals and never even bothered to double check their bag limits or anything.I eve saw the locals go home leave their limit at home and then return to the beach only to catch their limit again,And guess what the same locals who were standing and talking to the parksboard came back after catching his limit and stood next to the offical and proceeded to catch another bag limit..Hmm goes to show like most things in our country it's not what you know it's who you know..

Like i have said in a number of other posts i seriously think that we need to stand together and take this forward,,let us the angling comunity now take a stand,stand together and fight for ehat is right,we must insist on being volentry parksboard officials,If we do so then hopefully somewhere somehow we can make a small diference...

ps.Maybe we should call a boycotte of anglers buying their permits.Think about about it.They know that we cant do without fishing so they use it to their advantage.They exploit us.Considering all the llatest bans etc.. what excitement or joy is there going to beleft for us.Why dont we consider not buying these permits for 3 months or something similar.Then ide love to see where the funding will come from and how many job losses there will be in the parksboard it may not work but hay it may also at least get them to open their eyes that they need us more then we need them.

I agree Riymos, these officials choose when to turn a blind eye, i am all for sustinance fishing, give fish to those who need it for a meal, but these are the guys that are taking advantage, catching and collecting more than thier limits, and thus raping our resources... I hate to sound apathetic, but i really cant seee what we can do...we all kick up a fuss, get the message to the officials, and we end up leaving it in their incapable hands, then what happens these fat cats, sit back in their offices, give a krap, and wait for their next pay cheque on the 25th...This problem needs to sorted out at the top, and not grass root level...When the people on the top get nailed, then the people at the bottom feel the squeeze...Thus if we question the management of the Parks Board and nail them with proper evidence, then we have a start, and it will filter down to the parkie on beach patrol... We shold start a campaign of naming and shaming...I'm going to spend a few afternoons on the piers, after what i've seen and take a few photo's and video's, and forward them to the Parks board, and also when i see some poaching, i'm going to call the hotline and document the response time (if they come at all), then we have solid evidence of mis maanagement,and we can force them into action.... If i were them i'll have an official at the pier or other poaching hotspots 24/7....Its all about them being pro-active, and taking the initiave, and it looks like we gotta give them a solid kick up their fat butts to get them going!!!! So lets start at top....

we only pay for them to worry us on the beaches,it makes me mad when im busy fishing and they rock up and wana see your license.you have too leave every thing and walk up to your box and show it to them.but they wont go ask the poor owes on the other side fishing with scrap tackle who are bagging 100 karanteen 100s of shad.why dont they spend the money on our beaches like employ car guards to watch our cars and stuf like that.same story in the transkei.they rock up next to you on a horse and want to see your license.
