Hi

Used that concept in Zandvlei and Kalkies for harders and Mackerel with great success when I was a pikkie.
Works like a bomb.

use some chum of kalkies and bait up with a small piece of sard and you will get bait VERY quickly, streepi after streepi after streepi. Can be used in any lagoon or harbour

Why would this rod be better suited for catching live bait than my light spinning setup (3000 grinder, 7 foot rod), i.o.w. what appeal does it hold, other than being cheap?

excellent question. The reason is speed same as with a hand-line you can quickly position your bait very accurately and exactly were you want it and because of the stiffness of the bamboo ans the fact that there is hardly ever slack in the line you can set the hook very quickly. slack in the water is not good for this and remember you can see the fish take the bait most of the time so being able to strike at the right time makes thing easyer and faster.

the float is often not necessary though drift bait is far better unless the fish are holding at a specific depth or the water is not very flat

Gentleman that type of rod has been around for many years.
It is called a 'dipstok'and is normally manned by two people. One person operates the rod by dipping the bait in the water and hooking the fish, the second person is station behind the rod holder and baits the hook and takes the fish off. I have seen this system used on tuna boats as well one hooks and one gaffs.
A good team can land an enormous amount of fish in a very short time.

deffs outside! and dont drop it far out as they hugg the wall but you will get further out not hard, also maasbanker and mallet ect. use more than one hook 2-4 and make sure they very small. size 8 and smaller even size 12. streepi is an excellent firm bait and is worth the effort. So are maasbankers

Thanks for the tip. I decided to take the 7foot spinning rod out for some chokka. Managed to get a 30cm chokka on my 3rd cast but then got stuck into some bamboo or something while being distracted by a discussion with a tourist. Broke off my jig. And when I went back to my tackle bag I realised that I had only brought one jig with. But the chokka was coming out nicely. And pretty decent size

I imagine that would work very well.. here in Australia I know of pole fishermen from the UK who are having a great time using those poles in the salt, not using their catches for live bait of course but they are out-catching the other anglers who are after live bait all the time
