Guys

Catch and release is one most certainly nothing new as a Burning issue in certain if not all disciplines of angling for all the species of fish in our waters, hence this little poll, just to get the general feeling of Sealine members on Catch and Release?

Now remeber, it's anonymous so be honest, and lets get a true reflection of the state of releases taking place?

I would like to try and see what the feeling is on the freshies side, thing is I understand that in saltwater you don't need to release all your catches as you can take some fish home and make a lovely dinner.

Perhaps I should have said that, from the onset and/or labeled the poll differently?

Anyhow, your still welcome to cast a vote, if you have caught and released freshwater fish before.

LGF,

I enjoy eating fish too much to put every single fish back. I do not however keep every single pan sized fish that I catch, I probably keep less than 1% of total catch.

Have you ever caught a clean river barbel and smoked it's fillet? Or a nice small mouth yellow done whole over the coals? (I am going to get jumped on for that one) How about a pan fried bass fillet? Pickled mudfish?

I do not eat carp (The most disgusting fish I have ever tried to eat) as a rule and I find trout far too bony.

Cheers

Thanks for the alteration.

Yip, I've pan fried barbel fillets before and carp, I have to agree, MOST YUCKIEST thing I've chowed in my life and won't do that again, Trout, Like you said, too bony, Bass and Yellow, haven't eaten them before, however the nicest fish I've eaten was snoek and yellow tail smoked in my smoker with oak barrel shavings...

hmmm, I'm a little hungry right now....

I have to say the only two freshwater fish that i have eaten were Trout and Bass, which i caught on the South Coast at a place called Bracken Moore Hotel.A buddy of mine used to own that Hotel and we used to fish his dams and decided to taste the Bass that we caught.

I must say that if prepared right Bass is actually very good eating....Meat is white and if cleaned quick and properly it doesnt have the muddy taste.

Thats my experience with chowing freshies...

Riymos,

The muddy or not muddy taste seems to depend on the water you cacth the fish in. Clear running stream always gives mud free. In a clear dam your predatory fish are mud free (Barbel are predatory), but things like the carp which bottom feed will be muddy.

Yip, I know, Salties are better tasting than freshies, there's just no comparing the two... But I'd still like to put a nice LGF in the smoker one day...

LGF,

You want one just over a kilo for the smoker, nice balance between taste, size and bones.

LL

ps. Use it as fresh as possible.

Then I should have kept the only LGF I caught on Sunday which is my new PB weighing 1,64kg...

Will report, back somewhere in the bass section....

I have had Shad that I caught and it was amazing!! They were all in the 2kg range

I have also eaten Carp and Yellows, which wasnt bad, but nothing comes to freshly caught Saltwater fish.

I saw a lovely Shad recipe in the Salty section that I wanna try... Well it is a recipe even though you eat the fish raw.... Nyum!!

It was man, she wasn't a steam train at first, and like i said i thought the lure got stuck on something after leaving it lying there for so long, however, once she got closer to the surface, it was a horse (Fish) of a different colour, she went ballistic and there was some serious splashing there.

The nice thing about it, is that my PB's are getting there slowly, and that's what makes it soooooooo nice, 1st, 600g's, 2nd PB 900g's, the 3rd 980g's and now the 1.64kg's and now I can look forward to say a 2kg.  What's nice about that, well, I haven't caught something that big for my 1st PB, that, I'll be hunting LGF's for the rest of my life and never experience that thrill of Hey This Is A New PB, ever again, So I can experience it Several times (have already and wiil hopefully still have a couple of PB's) until I get to the biggest one.
