Casting Braid.....

I have recently started fishing with braid, i was using the cheaper braid last season (for Galjoen fishing) and it would frequently break when i get stuck, so this season i changed over to 50lb whiplash and i am having problems casting where i get slight overwinds and end up casting the sinker off, I am using a Torium 20.

What sort of braid are you guys casting with and are there certain braids that are better for casting than others?? Any input would be much appreciated!

D75,

That is not a casting braid.

I use the Berkley Fireline 30lb - you get a few different brands of casting braid.

The casting braid is "fused" it almost has like a wax type coating on it.

Dorado75. When casting with a multiplier it is not so, as to what breaking strain you are using but rather the dia of the braid you are using. ( remember we are not talking of braid as backing here )
It would be senseless, if you were always casting say with a .4 mm mono and now change over to a .2 or .25mm as you argue that now you can get maybe close to double the amount of line on your reel.
You will have burn offs with that thin dia on a multiplier and yes your line will snap should you stop it suddenly. ( same rule applies--never jerk a knot to see how strong it is- braid is the same does not like to be jerked.
Rather use a thicker dia braid say 2.7 to 3.2mm and that casting a sinker off will stop. SIMPLE REASON: being that in mono you have strech to absorb the shock, but in braid you need the thickness to stop the line snapping, should it be stopped instantly.
On " coffee grinders just the oposite applies the thinner the better.

Thanks man, the idiot salesman sold me the wrong stuff....... going to strip it off and use if for backing or jigging rather!!

Braids that u can use for spinning is Berkley Fireline, Powerpro and the Kingfisher Casting braid, I will only recommend the first 2.

Whiplash can be used for backing, not the best for jigging.

For jigging PowerPro and Saltiga Braid is good.

I use casting braid for leader on my carp rods and I really like it would it be wise to put braid on both reel spools is it not better then normal line?

Hi guys
What type Braid would you suggest to use for casting on a saltists 30, Im fishing over rocks and some sand i use 50lbs power pro on me F/S with a 80lbs braid rubbing/shock leader works very good,
But id love to try the saltist 30 with braid
And as for spooling the braid on the 30 would it be better to cross the braid on the spool rather than like mono to stop it digging in or is it not nessasary.

thanks tope

Whiplash-- Forget the strength, go with either .30mm or .32mm. Rolol on as normal mono ( just tightly)

For casting... the original FUSED Fireline is tops... followed by their new Berkley Tracer Braid... very impressed with it... Tuffline XP is excellent, as is Powerpro, (which has been bought by Shimano). I used the Sufix Performance braid, but just found it became a bit fluffy after a session. I still have Sufix on many of my reels for backing.

I found that with casting - the Whiplash 50lb is too thin. Used the 80lb and and 100lb for popping and it works perfectly well. Fished 10 days solid with it and it stood up to the best of them (YGK Ultra).

Dorado... I am assuming you're fishing with a leader, right?
