CASTING AT ROOIKRANS

As bad casting is one of the main causes resulting in friction at Rooikrans, I thought it a good Idea to put some common sense guide lines on record to make every one have a more pleasant day.
 
The main aim of a cast consists of 3 integrated, but separate objectives;
1.       To attract a fish to your lure to enable you to get a strike
2.       To cast your lure well over the fish so as not to scatter and spook them, OTHERWISE YOU WRECK EVERYONE’S CHANCE TO CATCH ONE.
3.       To cast in such a manner that you cause the minimum disruption to the others fishing around you and not to get tangled with someone else which may hamper both or more party’s ability to catch a fish.
 
 
  •   When not actually casting, keep your rod pointing down and out the way of others that may want to cast.[/*]
  •  Before casting;[/*]
  i.      Determine where you want your lure to land, at least 25 mt over the fish, in a way that when you retrieve it crosses the fish’s path.   If the fish are close, then cast short and possibly reduce the distance over the fish so as not to obstruct others.
  ii.      Do not cast over lines; do not cast towards the fish, fish in front of you.
  iii.      Consider the effect of the wind, cast in to the wind to retrieve your lure in front of you.
  iv.      Look around you.
   v.      If you can not cast, without significantly transgressing any one of the 3 above      objectives, DON’T,…… WAIT FOR AN OPPORTUNITY WHEN YOU ARE ABLE TO CAST.
 
 
Do not cast at or near fish that are behind someone’s lure, wait for those fish to clearly turn away from that person.   This will disturb the fish and often makes them turn off.

  • When blind fishing to attract fish, synchronise your cast with those around you.    [/*]
  • Cast roughly the same distance as your neighbour, place your lure roughly a distance to his side,  equal to the distance you are standing away from him.   [/*]
  • Don’t cast simultaneously, but space the casts.   [/*]
  • Don’t cast on top of anyone’s lure.  Consider the effect of the wind on your lure, always.[/*]
  • The more anglers there are, THE MORE IMPORTANT THIS BECOMES.  If you are still learning to cast according to these guide lines, go and fish to the right on Salmon ledge and try to stay out the way of the regulars.

When you accidentally make a bad cast or cast over a line, which even happens to the regulars, apologise, fix the problem quickly and carry on.   If it happens more often, then move to Salmon ledge until your confidence improves.
 
Even the best caster, will find it awkward to fish at a crowded Rooikrans, so don’t be embarrassed to fish on Salmon ledge or to ask at an opportune time.

A day after band season,on the Bluff,Durban shad in the 2 to 3kg range were coming out for about 3 weeks.It was nice as shad fishing was quiet in 2009.

Anglers who are dedicated and passionate about their sport. The ones I've met are a pretty decent bunch.
They also understand that you can not fish on one rock with 20 people without some order and discipline.

These "rules" were not invented recently but have come with many years of experience and actually make it possible for everyone to enjoy the sport.

Yes not bad Spinnerman.

For those wondering where the heck is Salmon Ledge its more commonly referred to as Mugs Ledge these days. A place where beginners can start and should.
Nothing wrong with the ledge, its low down, you have more control over your line in the wind plus more often than not a good place to raise fish when others cant.
Many regulars use it as their go to spot.
