Seb I don't believe you are being rude - not even remotely.
Rowing out at night is just not clever - and quite clearly as Werner has said - no matter how visible your jacket is it will not keep you safe and alive if you bail out - however if it was a life jacket that is another story.
It is this kind of thinking that leads to accidents and the very people you have portrayed as your reasons for leaving conventional is the very mindset that you have portrayed in your post above.
I think with Carpfinder 18's previous remark I think he is the one that owe's an appology.
Keep it real people and be safe - life is way more precious than losing your life rowing lines in

But think about it iv never fallen out of a canoe in the day have you?

When I was sdoing walking trails as a guide in Kruger on my off days I loved walking with my backup rifle (very wise old Shangaanie tracker) and he always used to moan at me and tell me that I should alwasy take a rifle - I asked him Why should I as I knew the bush and was wise in the ways of big game (well so I thought at least). His reply was simply "one day is one day".

Never really understood that till that one day came - but that is a story for another day.

Thing is an "accident" is well just that it is freak and unexpected so rather live life a little safe and I am sure you will live a whole herd longer and healthier.

Starting to sound like a wise old man myself now

I have no idea why you are so defensive or what your problem is. I merely highlighted what could happen and portrayed things in a funny way.
Life is too short to be serious.

I'd say get a few lumi-stix, rig them on your lifejacket, canoe/kayak and paddle and make sure you can see your camp/rods where you came from, because at night land disapears... I know. If its legal or not I dont know. Also you must at least be able to swim, And if the wind is blowing its a another story... at least there no sharks, so you can just swim it in, if you have some lekker fins/flippers and a emmer..

and take a knife with and do it before you crack any red tops... tassies or redheart

Well thats my Kaapse view, for what its worth
