Thanks JFE, appreciate the nice comments

One more small thing done - installed the mounting clips to hold my stern light in a safe place for daytime fishing (which is most of the time)

yes i was wondering where you purchase the flake paint that you used to paint your boat. Maybe if you had some boat building tips for me that would be pretty nice too. I am planning on building a 17ft skiff and your boat design could have a few modifications and i could build my center console skiff. All your tips and everything would help greatly.

thanks blake roberts

Blake I see you are from the US, so this is actually easier for you to get the stuff.
The flake I used comes from TCP Global, I used about 1lb of the Blue and 1/2lb of the silver to do the boat. The size I used was the 0.08". You mix the Flake into a Clear coat and spray it on. Stick with the smaller Flake or you have to oversize your spray nozzle drastically

If you want a centre console skiff my boats plans would suite you perfectly as this boat is actually a flats boat that I changed into a bass boat. You can get the plans from www.bateau.com it's called the Phantom 16, it is actually supposed to have a centre console. But there are lots of other plans too.

From that site follow their forum link and you'll find the best concentration of boat building knowledge and help around.

Good luck

I cant thank you enough for the advice, ive been on alot of other forums and they dont seem to be as helpful. I needed the flake paint for a bass boat restoration project i am completing within the next month or two. After i finish the bass boat I plan on starting on the center console boat. I may be conatcting you some during the build of my bay boat you did an awesome job on yours.

thanks Blake Roberts

And look what's hanging off the back - It's not mine, Oliver Masoni graciously lent me the motor so that I can test the boat.

Firstly I have to thank several people who helped to make this weekend happen without each one of these things it wouldn't have happened.

Oliver Masoni - for lending me his engine
Ian Stanley - for towing my boat, taking most of the photos and just being there as backup.
Rory Da Silva - For photos and the camera boat, Deep cycle battery for the trolling motor and being my wing man on the day.
Sean from Natal Power Boats for lending me a lift ring for the engine and stainless prop for the test
Lisa Stanley for videos
And my wife Danielle for videos and more importantly for supporting me through this whole build

I also need to thank the members on here who have shown interest and support to my build, it just wouldn't have been as exciting without being able to share the experience with all of you.
To my clients at BoatStuff.co.za without you my boat would never have gotten to this point without your help and support, thank you.

So let's get this party started

Filling her up for the first time and doing last minute checks

We were surprised when we got to the dam at 10am by a huge queue of cars as there was a mountain bike race happening with the main launch area being used as the finish line. So with great concern we found out that all the main slipways were out of bounds for the day.
We had to therefore use the Jet Ski slipway to do the launch which wasn't fun as it's about 10cm wider than my trailer with huge nasties on either side of it, but we managed anyway.

Is it gonna float????

OK it floats!!!!

It moves too!!!!

Beside envying the boat I envy even more how it must have felt to get her on the water.

I was very curious to see how the boat lay in the water, whether weight would be an issue. Would it be too low in the stern, would it have enough freeboard etc ... Needless to say the boat lies beautifully and has a very attractive attitude in the water. I'd say it looks perfect.

Got some good bowlift as well with the 115. She will fly with a 150.

Congratulations on your achievement and tight lines.

Well done boet!

I admire you and your work.

Would like to know what it cost you, time you spent ,what you will change should you do it again etc.

And did you at least caught something on her maiden voyage?

BIG GRATZ TO YOU!

You need to get the glitter from a company in the US called TCP Global, I tested tons of stuff locally available and all of it looses it's colour once it's seen the sun for a while.

Put a solid colour down first that closely matches the glitter then spray the glitter mixed into clear coat with a 2.5mm nozzle, then a few coats of clear over it to bury the glitter.

Thanks Frikster, sorry for the late reply.

I kinda lost count of all the small stuff but I think I ended up around R55k without motor.
I spent 2 1/2 years building her, about 2000hrs.

If I had to do it again - I would change the way I did the hatch lids and make sure I had a motor before I started, still don't have a motor for it:kaykak
And maybe build the 18ft version, although it is huge for a 16ft boat
