Building a Bass Boat

This is without a doubt the coolest thread I've seen on Sealine in years... dunno how I missed it from the start, but have just spent an amazing 10 minutes going through it, and my hat off to you Shannon, absolutely impeccable craftmanship and skill, vision and patience!

Stunning work, and one can see that no corners have been cut, and each and every piece and part of your process has been done perfectly, with no short cuts.

Lots of blood sweat and tears been put in here, and it shows...

Magic is the only way to describe it!

Thanks for the comments guys, it's nice to see the guys enjoying my build.

Left the boat building alone for the last 3 weekends and started building my trailer.

Still lots to do before it goes for galvanizing, but it's getting there.

Need some bling bling on the trailer too

Test fitting the boat on the trailer to get the bunks and bow stop placings locked down before it gets all welded up.

The trailer is a little further along now, I'll have to take some pics tomorrow to show where she's at.

Thanks for watching

You have attracted quite a lot of people who is following your project. It is something like a great movie or soapie with sequels. I certainly don't miss it!!!

Besides being so hecticaly impressed I must also say that you must have a lot of time at home to churn out such a stunner!! In no uncertain terms I suggest that you document everything you have done and publish a book.

Good stuff boet!!

Thank you, it's not that I have lots of free time - I just don't watch TV :)
Also bear in mind that this build is coming on up to 2 years now. I started 3rd Oct 2008.
I started a project to aid in my fishing hobby and it has become a hobby all of it's own. I have documented the whole build with around 500 pics, maybe when I've got no building to do I'll put it all together.

Thanks for watching the series :)

To be continued.................

Shannon,
You are truly an artist and your work and dedication shows. I absolutely love seeing "hands on" work and this is something you can really be proud of.

P.S. I was on your website today, looks great and your prices are brilliant! I'll be in touch for sure! Guys, go check it! www.boatstuff.co.za

Very very nice Shannon ! I am inpressed.

Re your trailer, add a flat bar on top of the channel to stiffen it up. Some pics here. Lotsa reasons.

Thanks Fanie, that's a nice trailer build tutorial.

I have already welded a flat bar on edge for strength, I didn't like the amount of flex I was getting when loading the boat on it. Nice to get confirmation. I've also added triangular flat plate in all corners just to tie everything together really well.

Well, seems like you're doing every thing right. I hope you will have many pleasant hours with her. (Remember the wife at times too ok)

Tonight I fitted the axle, winch, bow roller, tow hitch and installed the felt on the bunks.
Tomorrow the boat goes on it and she won't be coming off until she see's water.
Now it's time to start building the fenders
Sorry for the horrible pic, had to use my cell as my wife is hiding the camera

Shannon some info on the felt. With the weight of the boat that felt compresses quite a bit, especially on the edges of the bunks. If the bunk is tight up against one of the strakes you can get the top edge of the bunk rubbing up against the strake.

Only way to prevent this is to bolt a wooden strip to the top of the bunk and then felt on top of that. Polyethylene below the felt wont work because nothing bonds to it so you can't glue felt to it.

Thanks for the concern Mombakkie. It should be OK like it is as all of the bunks are well clear of any strakes.

I will keep an eye on it though and install strips of marine ply  if it starts to look dodgy.

In hindsight I should have bought the much wider felt and wrapped it over the sides.^^..
