hey guys
if anyone knows of any good tips or exercises i can do at home everyday to increase my lung capacity and hold my breath for longer, i would greatly appreciate it...

i used to dive allot when i was a id, and recently stared again with a few mates and realized i can only hold my breath for half of what i used to be able to. could be the 10 years of smoking, but who knows :)

so if you have an exercise you do every morning or is it as simple as holding your breath during the day... please just need some info!

thanks

I've also done the course through Trevor and he is a great teacher... there's also not a safer environment than having Trevor around!

Checkout Freedive Cape Town for more course options.

The basic principal is slow breathing from the stomach and not the chest. Some people like putting numbers to it like 5 seconds in, 10 seconds out, but there is no set formula. Just breath as slowly as you can while still remaining comfortable. NEVER HYPERVENTILATE! If you do you are just being a pansy and can't handle a bit of CO2 and you might even end up a dead pansy if you blackout in the water as a result.

The aim of breath-ups is to relax and bring down your pulse and not to magically increase oxygen in the blood. So if you want to do some daily stuff, simply do the slow breathing any time, anywhere and check how long it takes you to relax. You could also throw in 1 or 2 dry breath holds once you are relaxed and time yourself.

I'd go into other daily exercises that you could do, but if you do them incorrectly you might do damage.

I'd suggest taking a course with Linda Paganelli (Freedive Cape Town), Trevor Hutton or Hanli Prinsloo(iamwater.co.za) if you are really serious about improving your diving.

Hi Conrad

If you havent got enough money to do a course, buy the book 'Manual of Freediving" underwater on a single breath by umberto pelizzari , it has lots of exercises you can do. The best however is just dive lots and focus on relaxing , the less anxiety you have in the water the longer you will be able to stay down for.
