yesterday i was at ori and we were being breifed on the new tag and release program the new tagging system etc.

it was amazing to see what a little effort can do for our oceans

once we see stats u then start to feel there night be kight at the end of the tunnel maybe not for us but hopefully for our grand kids.

GREAT topic!  I see the Shad are mentioned most.  Just a bit of history for your interest.

My old man (way back in the day - late 60's) whilst working for NPB (based in Tinley Manor) did research on the increasing number of anglers and the dwindling number of shad.  He then took this to his boss who put him in touch with Rudy van der Els (Oceanagraphic Research) and then a process was started between them, where the Parks Board made the decision to ban shad fishing completely, and then gradually build up to the season and bag limit we have today.

A few years after that a Cape conservation guy met with the Natal guys to discuss how things work, and they said the NPB was too anal and too restrictive with their coast and fishing rescources, and that there was plenty in the sea and they didn't see the need to be so tough.

Well we are now nearly 30 years down the line, and KZN still has great fishing.  The Cape on the other hand is another picture altogether.  We have fish on the threatened list, you sometimes can sit for hours on end with not even a pecker to keep you interested, trek netters take out all and everything they catch, and I STILL see shore anglers taking undersize fish.

For the record in the 10 years I have been here (in the Cape) I have been checked for a fishing licence only ONCE!  So I think the moral of the story is conserve, conserve, conserve.  If it's undersize PUT IT BACK (preferably with a tag) and if the season is closed, it's closed for a reason! We shouldn't HAVE to have the Parks Board there to police things, but clearly they are still required.

I remember before I left KZN the then NPB had an honorary officer program, is that still going, and if so how many KZN guys on this forum are members?

I raised this topic many months back.

Yesterday i saw something that made me mad. I stop at Blue Lagoon every morning to check teh water out etc. I stood next to guy who is a regular at blue lagoon. he was fishing with a small rod catching blacktail and wave garricks. He caught alot. What was odd was that everyone he caught, he measured with his tape, and then put it into his bucket. there were fish small as 6 cm, and his bucket was getting full. Another guy n standing next to him caught a small ( about 800 grams) rockod and through it back. teh black tail fisherman got very agitated. cant these stupid guys stop the rape of marine life

We must have been standing next to each other because I also saw same thing. Its crazy but that is why we need to start the fish preservation early and Help KZN Wildlfe. I see on the WildLife Site SANLAM is comming in huge projects..we need to as SEalone become involved in such.

We have a growing membership and to become involved in one the SANLAM projects can only be beneficial to our resources.

P>S the same guy was boating to SMILEY on how many fishes he used to catch a few years ago..now the are very few...I WONDER WHY ????

last year on north pier i saw 2 guys thrown into the water.all they did was tell a couple of guys that were fishing there to throw the undersized blacktails and shad back.

i mean if people of today resort to violence im sure alot of us wouldnt be able to say a thing because most time good fisherman are out numbered by the rottern eggs.

i think the parksboard get paid to do a dam job what happens to all the money from our permits etc.they need to be seen alot more and doing alot more then they are.

 

my sugestion is to call the parksboard and report these rotten eggs take down their vehicals reg and report it hopefully somewhere somehow these guys would get the message.'

i know its a long shot but hey if we as ambasadors of the sea stand up and join arms then eventually we must succeed.

Yes guys, Sealine is a good forum for us to do something, educate and learn. teh fact that we chatting about this through sealine is a positive thing.

The Marine Living Resources Act  (Section 57) says that if you are the holder of a permit (eg. Post office permit for angling) you are obliged to report a fishing related offence.

So... Take down the details of offenders . Take a photo (most  cell phones have cameras) report it to MCM or NPB and then nag.

Nag them to do something about it ask for a report on the investigation. If there has been no follow up or investigation then ask why.

Its going to be a long road ahead of us till we get to a point where every1 puts back the undersize fish. I get pissed off when i do get a chance to fish on the pier in dbn , the guys there "MURDER" the undersize fish , and wats worse is that they just leave the fish laying on the pier. I wish they parksboard would be on the piers during the night cos thats when most of the "PUNTERS" do thier fishing , its an ongoing thing , surely the parksboard know abt the ongoings on the piers.

When i go fishing for some of my relatives in dbn , they know as long as they come fishing with me THERE WILL BE NO undersize fish taken. It was hard for them in the begining to put it back , but after lots of lectures and pulled up faces , they finally see the light and i'm glad, cos now they can teach others and it will be an ongoing thing. I HOPE.

that spunds good, just imagine if we could stop the illegal trawlers as well how many fish we would have in the see. We have seen them often in Transkie waters coming in close at night, so close that you can see the people on the deck setting the long lines obviously for sharks and any thing else thay they can catch. At times like this a wish I had a rocket launcher....

Anyway lets hope the authorities wake up and start working the same hours that these guys opperate and catch them or at least chase them away.

If you see a foreign vessel that is not supposed to be in our waters, take down the details painted on the vessel. Send me a pm and I will raise it with the commercial operators.

The commercial guys have been asking MCM to improve enforcement and get the poachers out. 

It is theoretically possible to have the offending vessel banned from coming to a South African port.

Hi guys

I think we must remember the story of the women walking along the beach where thousands of Starfish were stranded on the sand.As she walked past , she picked one at a time and threw them back in the sea..A guy also walking on the beach seeing thosands of these starfish on sand..asked her whether she thought she was going to make any difference as there  thousands stranded.As she picked another one and gently threw it into the sea..she said I made a difference to that little fellow.

I am sure many of you have heard that little tale diffently but every little helps..like our friend from JHB that makes sure that hais relatives do not catch undersized fish.

@jace , maybe we should change the phrase "charity begins at home" , to "conservation  begins at homes "  if we can change the mindsets of those closest to us, its a start and i'm sure it will have postive effects on those that they come into contact with aswell.
