Best Month For barbel

Just had a very lekker interesting and long phone conversation with Kitefisher about fishing in General.

I mentioned to him that it was my intention to start this post.

Barbel can be caught throughout the year - maybe not so on bait but definately on lure.

I would like to kno from you guys out there what your best month for barbel is and what makes it your peak month - is it because you fish more at that time than others - are the barbel in the shallows? Are the barbel more active at certain times than others?

WHAT, HOW  AND WHY?????

Looking forward to your responses:wfish:wfish:wfish

i found end of october is the best month for me for baits.
water is calm, very lilwind (in jhb) and surrounding areas
and the fish are usually up and about due to the rain which should have just happened, and the warming waters
. for artlures i found april to be the best month and to add to that i found small rattling cranks to work the best,
ie rattle traps or lipliss rattling rapalas. i think this is due to the fact that that years frie would be about the size of a ounce artlure,(crank bait) i think they feed so prolifically at this time to fatten up for there slow winter metabolic rate, on that im not to sure, just an educated guess...... hope this input is valubale

Deisil, All inputs are valuable ,once we have a couple of variable opinions, we can make a few educated deductions/guesses,and then ,maybe by using catch-records from now until winter next year make up a profile of best month/s for barbel.

good plan kite fisher, ryan you might be right, couldnt find me cell phone i put it in the fridge when i went to get the coffe for the milk, its gonna be a long day,

@kitefisher: i have never actually had someone tell which month is best , but only a vague opionen of mid dec, cause its the middle of summer, it would be really cool to know when the wiskers is at his most active and hungery.

as from today can all who wish to particpte in the this keep a written history of bait used, lure used, time date depth all the important stuff,..

@kitefisher,.. do you think a poll vote for best month might help?

I had a blast at the end of Nov last year at the Vaal dam. I caught about 8 whiskers in the 8-10kg range... All on carp head.

Deisil,

A poll might probably do it ,but it wont be as accurate as record-keeping from now till ,say, next May/June. A few interesting factors must also be born in mind, more people fish in the summer-months because its "tradition",and the weather is warmer and it is a more pleasant experience in general. Is that not maybe the reason more barbel are caught then.

It becomes a bit like using your favorite art-lure,the one you like most spends the most time in the water, and may be the reason why you catch most fish on it.Is it then the effectiveness of the lure,or the fact that you cast it 80% of the time that renders the catches.??

As I said ,a poll will give us historical input, but it would be nice to go through the motions and get input on a regular basis,as to where the carp are spawning ,and if there is a definitive correlation between this occurance and the capture of barbel in the vicinity.

Its not on top ,its iiiiiiinside.::rofl:::jest

from experience barbel are much slower in winter, i fished many icy winter morning just as many as summer, so i think we can narrow it down to the warmer months, but ill start keeping a record from the week after next, when i go fishing again for whiskers , and ill also start using other lures hehehe
