Long time no post ... atleast not that I have noticed ... lol ...

I am seriously not confident with my cast ... and what makes it worse is that I am the new guy 2 fishing amongst my friends < when they start going again> ... They cast easily 80m plus and i am only hitting the 50m mark < very embarrassing since I am the biggest guy> ... I know muscle means nothing when casting but I just can't improve ...

I would not try casting a bomb with a M or P sinker at the moment ... But when I am confident enough I know that I will be ready 2 Invite u on a fishin trip along with the other guys who have been teaching me ... lol ...

You jumped ahead of me there. We usually go and camp at the Vaaldam for two or three nights. If you are up for it, the next time we go, I will send you an invitation. I am not the best angler on this site, but I know a bit to assist you and you might teach me someting.

Casting is something that comes with a lot of practise. I started fishing when I was five. As I started doing leagues, provincial and SA trails, I use to spend most of my weekends on a rugby field, practising my cast. I can't cast 250m, but I can get it in a fair distance.

I saw a video on youtube, where the guy explains how to improve your casting. The next trip to the dam, I am going to try that, and I am very positive that I will better my distance with the second cast.

Will keep you updated on the camping plans.

That definately sounds like a plan ... let me just get a bit more confident and a new rod < snapped tip> ... If u can cast further than me, I take my hate off 2 u ... hahaha ... Fishing sine u were 5 ... holy hell ... I have been fishing once and started 2 weeks ago ...

U say that u practice on a rugby field ... did u cast with 2 sinkers on the line or what < how did u match the weight of sinker\bomb when normally fishing>. ... Do u overhead cast or pendulum ?? ... What is considered a good cast distance ??

Not one sinker. A wet tennis ball. Once you get used to using a wet tennis ball, casting with a small sinker and a mielie bomb is very easy.
I generally cast about 120 -150 meters, depends on how deep the water is.

Funny that you mention the wet tennis ball.

I been using a golf ball for my boys - to practice with.

I was chatting to Enigma yesterday and he mentioned the tennis ball - I am gonna make some up for my boys to practice with for this weekend at the dam.

I could also use some practice but need to find the right rods first - I am going to try the Awa Shima rods from Enigma.

Thanks for the invite! For todays graphite rods the overhead cast is well suited. Have a look in the general section as a lot have been said recently about casting. One way of getting some distance is to use a vaaldam(bottom) rig with a p2 or p3 sinker. Just dip the sinker in some dip of your choice (molasses also works well) and then dip the wet sinker in some dry groundfeed. Works a charm. I always try to keep the hooklinks thinner than the leader as it allows the bait to move more naturally in the water. If your knots are good, you wont loose any fish. Remember to wet the line before tightening the knots using a slow movement making sure everything goes where its supposed to. Just be patient when bringing in the fish aswell and you wont be disappointed.

I have two 14" Sensation rods. I am very impressed with these rods and they are very light.
The wet tennis ball is the easiest way to get used to casting with a mielie Bomb.

Hi pain, I am giong out this weekend for a fishing trip if you want you can send me your e-mail adress and after the weekend i will send you the picks of the reels rods traces hooks blabla bla bla I will also send you the tipe of line I use for distance casting and it probably will give you a beter understanding because a pick always works beter that words (well for me it does) then after you can take all the info you received from the guys and make your own combo.

While we're on the topic, Im curious to know how you guys bait your hooks? For instance, when baiting a floatie with dough backing, somebody taught me the nifty trick of rolling the dough thinly between my hands & spiralling it onto the hook shank, then placing the floatie roundabout where the curve of the hook is with the hook point protruding, will try my paint skills & see what I can come up with, but how do the other guys bait a hook with floatie & dough backing?

& how about baiting earthworm, do you put anything on the hook except the worm, coz I had some success with baiting a worm & a floatie (please dont laugh) but also some luck with only the worm?

Some more...when I use carp fanatics microfloats, I dont back it up with a dough, any comments on that?

I try to always back up my floats just to close the hook. I watched a springbok angler two or three weeks ago sitting next to me and he had the best Idee ever he actually powder coats his hooks white black red ex so if he puts a floati no backing needed because the hook is white and this works. have anyone else tried this?

Do you make your hook snoots the same length on the Baby Shoes?

I make mine the same but have been told to make them different lengths - your opinion?

 

Sorry for my late reply, I usually make them different lengths. Do you guys use different baits on the babyshoe trace hooks or the same? I usually vary it with either the colour or size of floatie, or I put only dough on one hook & a floatie & dough on the other.

Generally I put different baits on the hooks when using the rietvlei (normal or slider)....like a floatie & backing on the top hook, & either wholegrain mealie or earthworm on the bottom. Once I know what the fish are taking, I will usually change my apporach accordingly.

Any comments guys?

Sounds like a plan...

I've seen some good catches on dough alone on one hook & flaotie with dough on the other, fish took mostly the dough when I as sitting next to a guy doing this...

Just something I wanted to add (that's probably been said hundreds of times b4)... during my last fishing trip, I realised the value of starting out plain, & sticking to it if it works. I've resolved to always start plain from then onwards as I saw how excessive flavouring scares the fish away...& only using dip if the plain bait fails me....everything in moderation.....:fishn

I always use 2 different baits on any trace.

I sometimes use a dough backing but I must say that I have very little confidence in dough - I have had way more success on regular and bleeding floaties. I make up a lot of my own flavour floaties and have had a lot of success on them.

On the Baby Shoes trace I was making my hook snoots the same lenght but leaving a longer "tag end" on the one snoot by the 3-way swivel - to differentiate which bait the fish was caught on.

Someone told me they should be different lengths - your opinion?

I fish 99% with the Sliding Rietvlei.
What length do you use on your snoot on the Rietvlei?
I am making mine about 100-120mm.

My first 2 baits are normally plain (4 throws)

From there I will use a "potent" bol dip if it is a cold day or a "sweet" dip if it is a warm day.

For the potents I do not apply too much - for the FX and other "sweet" dips I apply a lot more.

I have also been playing around with the Ama Shake Shake fluoro pellets in the boms now as well.

When you say your first 4 cast's are plain then for how long does your line stay in the water before rebaiting

That will depend on the tempo of the guys around me.

For a first I would have thrown like 10-15 boms to make a feeding ground before the actual fishing even starts.

The first baits would maybe be 10 minutes or so. By reeling in sooner to rebait would not really do much harm as you are just increasing the feeding ground.

The effects of the feeding ground are only really seen/felt by 11h00 or so in the morning. Up until 11h00 you may feel you have made a fatal mistake as you are behind everyone else around you - by 11h00 the other guys will be watching tv as you "steal" all their fish.
