Hey Hey,


It's the annoyin guy again ... When I went fishing last week, I was basically knotting my hooks onto my line using a uni knot ... This guy came up to me and laughed sayig i must use a Rietflei or Baby shoes set up ... So i learnt how to do those ... now my question is ... ... Do you get other types of these set ups and wat is the correct name for them??

you were using the petanosta trace at 1st?? thats a good trace if you trying for distance. baby shoe and rietvlei is also commonly used. it just depends what you prefer and also sometimes the dam terrain.....if theres grass, use longer hook lengths.  i'm also looking to improve my game...... what knots are you using on your hooks?

what size hooks are you using? what brand? ....etc

Ok so I know I am not the smartest guy in the world ... but ... WTF is a petanosta trace ... lmao ...

When u say longer hook lenghts are u talking bout the actual hooks or the line from swivel 2 hook??


As 4 my equipment, I use Sensation hooks < vasbyt if its all I can find> ... the hooks are carp killers and D somethings they look the same as the carp killers just black in colour sizes 5 and 6 ... I have Van Der Merwe hooks but they big and i have not used them yet... I only know how 2 tie 2 knots, ~ blush ~ ... The snelled uni-knot and the blood knot < tying main line 2 leader> ...

I use XX Brown < 9lb> as main line and XX Hi-Abrasion Dull Green < 18lb> as my leader, if I cant afford XX Hi-Abrasion I get Relix Best Balance < 15lb> ...

I am currently saving attempting 2 buy the Bazooka or something sealine can recommend and a Shimano reel ... but those are dreams 4 now. < unless some poor soul feels sorry 4 me and gives me a cheap rod thats better than mine>

The best all round trace to use when conventional fishing would be the "Gly Rietvlei" trace. For better results I'd recommend using Daihichi hooks as the are chemically sharpened and not over priced. Hook size, I wouldn't go larger than a 1 or 2. Best results are had with 0.8 size hooks. Use a knot-less knot to tie the your hook as it gives you a better angle for more solid hook ups.
EoP I'd recommend taking a look at the Bank Scene DVD's and try to get the full range from 1-8. They are not expensive and they are great with excellent advice especially if you are just starting out.

Hi Duanejc,

Thank you 4 the trace and the pic 2 help me understand. I have a few questions if you don't mind.

1. Where exactly can I get Daihichi 0.8 size hooks and are they not terribly small < not sure if larger numbers mean bigger or smaller> and are they not fly hooks ??

2. What is the knot-less knot < dont knots have knots hence the word> ... How can i go about doing this knot??

3. Where can I purchase Bank Scene DVD's ??

Can I replace the sinker with a spring or a M sinker so I can add a bit of m.bomb 2 it ?? ... And ... What is the deal with the m.bomb, I know its 2 create a feeding zone around your hook but wont it cause your hook bait 2 be less "attractive" to the fish ??

I make mine the same but have been told to make them different lengths - your opinion?

The Sensation Linx # 1 are about the same size (gape and shank size) as the Daiichi 0.8 - they are thicker than the Daiichi though.

They are also chemically sharpened - I dont like the Daiichi too much as the hook is very thin and can tear out the fishes mouth easier. The Daiichi will most definitely "purchase" better than the Linx - there are pros and cons for both.

Hi EOP,

On your first question, any decent tackle store should stock these hooks as they are very popular. The 0.8 hooks are especially popular amongst the competitive bank angling guys. They are pretty small, but they do the business. I have landed many 8-10 kg carp on them and plenty of cats so I have full confidence in these hooks. You should fish with what you are comfortable with. I was at first also very skeptical about these small hooks, but since my first comp fishing with them I have never looked back. You need to try out the different options and see what works for you.

All you do is cut the hair off. In my opinion it is the best knot to use to tie your hooks on with!

Again any decent tackle store should be selling the Bank Scene DVD's, you can even ask them to order the older DVD's for you. I got mine from Kloppers in Bloem.

The sinker, I use the "Mushroom" (M) sinker on the Gly Rietvlei, it works the best to hold your Mielie bomb. As for the size you should not use bigger than a 1.5, the lighter your weight the better. The bomb is pretty important as it serves more than 1 purpose. One, it carries your flavour into the water when you place your chosen dip on it, and two, when the ball starts to break up the particles start to drift around and attract to fish to your bait. Remember a carp feeds by filtering its food, so it is continually sucking and blowing and it will pick up your hook bait if it is feeding on and around your bomb.

WOW ... you are like an encyclopedia ... lol ... I will check out the tackle shops in my area and maybe see if any fishermen in my area have the disks just so I can see them.

I already have M sinkers, although I use M0 and M1 < that is what I was advised 2 use because my casting action isnt smooth> ... Can dips go off ?? ... I am not working at the moment so I am very hesitant 2 buy dips and baits due to the "shelf life" ... I bought floaties < large honey glow and small FX> but mine are already going hard and brittle < feeding them onto the hook crumbles them> ... ...

How did i miss this thread? Duanjc, gud advice! I myself use daiichi nr1 hooks. Or pioneer iseama smallest i can find. Mostly i use a M0 weight and a very small mbomb. If the wind blows i go a bit heavier, M1 - M2. You can use a P shape weight with a bomb as well. Just practice, practice, practice! It took me a year to get confident with casting a bomb without a spring. And go through the older posts as you will find a lot advice and stuff that will assist you.

Hi all,


I only noticed now that I am trying 2 recreate the posted traces that between swivel and hook the line break strength is half that of the Leader line ... Is this 2 prevent losing the leader by having the hook line break first or can I use the same Leader line ??


On traces like the Gly Rietvlei where there is a "sliding" action on the upper hook ... is it better 2 use a floatie on that hook and a heavier bait < if they exist> on the lower hook ?? ... And must all bait on the trace follow the same scent\flavour ?? ... < sorry if it's a dumb question>
