Closest I got to bagging one was while spearfishing(many moons ago) north coast. I was still on the way out to the back line, I was in a rip next to some rocks when I spotted two beauts on the bottom, close.
I lined up let fly, completely missed and got whacked under the nose and nearly lost my front teeth!
In my excitement I had forgotten I was using a new spear gun with double rubbers, man that thing recoiled like crazy as I was not holding it properly!
Will never forget the tassels next to their mouths, beautiful fish.
Hopefully my son or I will have the privilege of catching one one day.

Look for stretches of beach with long rolling foamy waves. We call it a Plaat. The belman move onto these flat areas to feed. Very light trace, cone sinker and prawn or moonshine or a combo.

My success rate on braid is way down, all mine have been caught on nylon. Belman are finicky fish. Love catching them.

That's my belief. I fish for them out of the sand spike as i normally have two rods in the water.
You know a belman us on when the line goes slack or starts washing to the side. I've done a few trips with one braid and one nylon setup, and the nylon has outfished the braid on those times. But that's only for belman...
