Tried a couple of times since last year, but for the life of me can't hook one of the buggers.

O well, can only try again...

This is my next fish on the list......off to Die Dam 20-23 Sept. Are the Bellman known to come out off that stretch of beach? plan to have some prawn, worm and chokka.

I have caught my best Bellman on the beach next to the rocks. When facing the sea, the set of rocks to your right, approximately 100 metres left of that rock, cast ridiculously close about 30 - 40 metres with prawn or worm.

Beware the loose seaweed that clogs your line so don't leave your line in the water for more than 3 - 5 minutes.

Beautiful fish guys.

Closest I got to bagging one was while spearfishing(many moons ago) north coast. I was still on the way out to the back line, I was in a rip next to some rocks when I spotted two beauts on the bottom, close.

I lined up let fly, completely missed and got whacked under the nose and nearly lost my front teeth!

In my excitement I had forgotten I was using a new spear gun with double rubbers, man that thing recoiled like crazy as I was not holding it properly!

Will never forget the tassels next to their mouths, beautiful fish.

Hopefully my son or I will have the privilege of catching one one day.

Thanks Mike. I am going to gather up all the advice on this thread, on how to catch these elusive characters and launch an organized assault. I was thinking on short casts, of using an Exage 100M, SL20 with braid. Should be fun on that rod.

Look for stretches of beach with long rolling foamy waves. We call it a Plaat. The belman move onto these flat areas to feed. Very light trace, cone sinker and prawn or moonshine or a combo.

Good luck.

My success rate on braid is way down, all mine have been caught on nylon. Belman are finicky fish. Love catching them.

Just on the braid issue. The braid will have nylon leader and light fluoro terminal trace etc.....is the braid simply too direct on the take?

That's my belief. I fish for them out of the sand spike as i normally have two rods in the water.

You know a belman us on when the line goes slack or starts washing to the side. I've done a few trips with one braid and one nylon setup, and the nylon has outfished the braid on those times. But that's only for belman...

Yip.....will put a small rod short for Bellman and fish a second rod long. Will use mono for the Bellman.....at least till I get the hang of these guys. Many thanks.
