The Goukamma MPA and the Marine Research Project - presents a short discussion with pointers and guidelines for all coastal anglers.

A legal size Blacktail 20cm....grows 1cm per year!!!! How many did you pull out in one fishing mission? What are YOU putting back into the programe?

I am of opinion and I can be wrong, that size limit should be reduced.
If we look at growth rate/fisherman fishing (i dont have any stats)sure we will all be very suprised to the fact that ALL Marine Sealife is in jeapordy.
Water covers almost 70% of the planets surface,the life within it has sustained some of the human population, now we are experiencing population growth,pollution and hence exploitation of the planets greatest resource.

I dont see our sons and daughters ever benefitting from the oceans of the world. I vision only a decline in all life and a control by greed.
Its beyond the time to act...I believe we are too late to even try.But as long as Im here I will do my bit....what about the rest, will they want to change?

Meeting was held as scheduled (waar was julle?)

A short report by Colin/Carike on the statistics compiled from his/her last visits, and ongoing studies in the De Hoop;Goukama and Tsitsikama reserves.

Noticeable patterns are emerging, the Blacktail being a very popular fish being caught. An increase in the amount of anglers, a worrying factor! Areas frequented in Summer are also a target in the Winter months.

1. Bag limits NOT being adhered to!

2. Size limits NOT being adhered to!

3. Fishing times NOT adhered to - Reserve areas are restricted after 18:00 hrs or after Sunset. No admittance (fishing not allowed)

4. Fishermen NOT aware of size limits.(no tape measure)

5. Fishermen NOT aware of Species.(no booklet)

Those and other topics were discussed, it was also mentioned to make this a more regular meeting, to inform and enlighten the public - hopefully by word of mouth more people will become more aware of the sensitivity of these protected MCM's.

1. Mention made to decrease excisting size limits and enforce a 'size' limit for bigger fish.
2. Mention of a 'fishing area' only in Goukama and a 'non- fishing' area in the Sedgefield/Gerickes Point/Wildernis areas (may soon be designated to a bait collecting area only?)
