Dont forget redbait!
I don't touch that stuff !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's simply the best: it's free, abundant and has a great scent and colour!  There's another free bait that works great, white mussel!

I prefer short shank 1/0 hooks for blacktail and all the smaller bankvis (zebra/hotttentot/etc).  They are great sports on light gear and with braid you can feel every nibble.  While visiting Stilbaai in April the water was cold and Galjoen scarce, but the blacktail sure didn't let it put them off.  The water was so cold I even caught a white stump (not Cape stump) amongst the blacktail in the gullies...

Wow Neil, I didn't know about the lemon juice - I missed that tip.  Thanks for mentioning it!  I always thought it too destructive to collect these worms.  Do you find this method very effective to get them out?  Do worms not just crawl further away under the mussel bed?

We catch awesome stumpies, blacktail, banded galjoen, stone bream and even the odd shad on redbait at Mapelane.Seven foot medium heavy bass rod with a small Daiwa Coffe. A sliding barrel sinker onto a swivel with a 400-500 mm leader to a small hook. Very few traces lost with this setup.

Miss the little guys since I moved from East London to Cape Town .Winter shore angling is very difficult in winter in the Cape and when I stayed in East London I could spend hours targeting these little fish on light tackle idf the elf and other gamefish were not on the bite.

You are looking in the wrong place!! Strand reefs will give you more Blacktail than Galjoen. I put all mine back since I dont eat fish , so there is still plenty around!!  Look for "off colour" water and some foamy spots and your halfway there. Redbait works the best on the reefs(fresh or "matured")

I like to use very light tackle small hooks, light 4kg line and a bass rod, Blacktail come in unbelievably close with the push before high tide.  Look for a deep gully between the rocks.I only use Chokka it isnt so tedious to bait with on the small hooks.

You just need to be patient and catch plenty small ones in that gully and then suddenly BAM that big one grabs the bait and just moves off, no bite!I have caught some big ones like this before.
