Just about ,FN THEN R1 WITH WOODEN BUTT.
Funny it took us 9 months to learn what you guy's needed 1 and 2 years.

Lol...but then you were only playing at being soldiers...border war for the military only began in 1974....

First 6 months in Ladysmith KZN 5 SAI and then did last 6 months in Phalaborwa 7 SAI. 1989 intake and we were the first intake to do only a year. One of the best years in my life and I will agree that National Service must be introduced again so that discipline can be drilled into the younger people.

Ja nee,81/82,6 months in 1 Maint Unit Kimberly ,rushed off to the border ,6Maint Unit Rundu for 18 mnths,did not even know which way to point a rifle,but we could drive,Samil 100 through the Angolan bush.Drive bufells like they were Feraris.
Used to do trips down to Grootfontien quite often,loved the South West Africa scenery ,would love to go back

Kan lankal nie meer onthou nie, maar dit was iets soos 89336891: Oudtshoorn, Lohatla, Saldanha (lekker by Donkergat met 'n krefie of twee in 'n PT broek ::S) 2SAKK en Mesina (Mabilikwe en Madimbo). So nou en dan in die wildtuin en op en af met die Limpoporivier ... nogal half warm daar as ek reg onthou. Daar was so paar ander plekke en ondervindings met diere, tiere en 'n leeutjie of twee, maar die name ontgaan my bietjie.

Het maar min met die R4 en R5 gespeel, maar daar was 'n paar ander (907 recoilless was pret, meeste gehou van die 60mm, bietjie van die 81mm, baie van die 40mm met die drom en baie respek vir 'n AK ... dit pas by my naam).
Goeie dae, goeie mense ... lekker vlakvarkie :SSS. Snaaks hoe mens nie die slegte onthou nie. Moet mooi dink oor ratel tow bars en nog wat.

How many of us had actual "contacts" in the army. We were ambushed on patrol one night. Remember we shot the living daylights out of the bush. Fortunately none of our guys were hit.

Did 2 and a half years is total, contacts yes, carry the scars. Lost some great guys there.

I think mentally a lot of us became stronger, it made men out of boys, it all depended on your attitude and mindset.

I went to the army with, "I have to go, might as well make the best of it" It def worked for me.

I enjoyed the good and bad, will I do it again?? Dont really know to be honest, guess it depends on the situation.

Did not have actual contact,but was involved in ops Askari,a platoon of Air Force guys with 20mm guns mounted on Samil20s went in ,next day all came back in body bags ,not nice seeing so many dead kids,because thats what we were,got chased out of Angola that night by Russian tanks,had to drive through the night with no lights,all the way hearing the guys on the radio telling us to get a move on,expecting to be blasted at any minute is not cool

Was afgedeelde diens saam met Artillerie, 141 Battery (G2), die hele Sektor 10 deurgetrek vir 11 maande.  Kannie meer my R5 serial nommer onthou, maar onthou darem nog my Casspir se registrasie nommer: BGJ756M. Met betrekking tot die Browns wat nog pas...ek stem saam met Simen...

:SSSEk het nie geweet dat browns so baie kan krimp van so lank in die kas le nie:SSS

36hrs on a train from Wingfield, klaared in Heidelberg Transvaal.

Officers course MLW (Mechanised Leader Wing)

Foxtrot Company, 1SAI Tempe. Bloemfontein.

Seksieleiding, 6 weeks in De Brug.

Lohatla Army Battle School for 3 months 90mm anti-tank ratel training, Vasbyt etc. "Een Zero Brandpad"

Ended up 61 Meg Rooikop base, Namibia.

Ratpacks, 6packs for R6 and min dae.

86 250230 BG then PE

1 Maint Unit (Kimberley +/- 5 days) then passed pre selection for Bats - transferred to Bloem

1 Para Bn + 44 Para Bgd

Then Navy for a few years (serving on Strike Craft in Durban, also did trips on Outeniqua to Antartica and Drakensberg to US + Canada) Seen quite a few countries whilst being in the Navy) Left the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer

Certainly brings back some memories. Eventually became Lt and spent some years as platoon comander with 37, later on to be called 202 posted in the Kaokoveld.Recall some fond memories of excursions causing trouble in Angola, met some really "touched"guys. Tough bunch of troops, totally fearless.
