After all of last weeks waiting, and advise from Trout, I finally got to test out all my new stuff at Kloofzicht on Sunday.
We arrived at 6am and by 6.30am lines were in the water. I had my buddy Mark with me. He broke up with his chick of 1.5years on Saturday morning, so was as bleak as anything.
3 hours went by and we didn't get a single bite. I was using a purple wooley bugger. I decided to change to a 'white death'. We were sitting on the bank, fly casting while seated, and my mate was whinning about his break-up. Then, all of a sardine, BANG, the line went tight, i did one of those slip strike's and the rod double in half. The fish was going crazy at the end of the line, left right, left right. And it was a big one too, had to be - given the bend in the rod. I decided to get up to finish the fight. Without using my hands i tried to stand, but lost my footing on the slippery bank. I dropped the line, but held onto the rod. I managed to stand and when i picked up the line, the fish was still on....awesome. I thought to myself, come to daddy, and then, just as soon as it started, the line went slack, and the fish was gone!!
I couldn't frikkenbeleiveit!! It was a sizer of note (i guess, cos i never saw the fish, not even the water was disturbed). I reckon it must have been a carp, cos i can't imagine it having been a trout - to much luck for a first timer to have been a big trout.
We stayed till 2pm and didn't have another bite. Bleak, oh so bleak. I can't believe it got away. I reckon it must have been 3 / 4kgs.
Thanks Trout for all your help!!
