Hannes,Reefman has been so kind as to move several topics that are related to kitefishing to our new forum,a search will help with some of your questions, and for additional info I include the following.I know a tutorial is long overdue,I am sure it will become a reality now that we have our very own Sealine kitefishing forum.

The rod I use is a ELBE Musclecracker,it is short and relatively inexpensive,(after all it is only for flying and retrieving the kite if you want to drop)For most kites a Maxima.50mm line will do the job,but Dyneema as sold by Windsong kites and others is probably lighter for its strength.(you do get sagging in the line over distance).

As a reel,I use a secondhand Scarborough 10 inch which is only because it is very strong and hauls line per meter.Remember this is only to fly the kite and retrieve the kite(although I suppose you would be able to pull a mean fish with it.).It neednt be as mine, use any reel that holds enough line to fly and retrieve the kite to your desired distance, /same goes for the rod.

As a fishing rod most of your heavy shark outfits will do the job,or as per specie targetted ,It is not necessary to overgun if you are targetting edibles for example.Line capacity is arguably your main concern if you want to take out a Livie and have it "available" for predators from the shoreline. If not you can let it go out with the kite (2man operation) and drop it at your desired distance.

The size of baits are unfortunately determined by the pulling-power of your kite and the strength of the breeze on the day,a 1mx1m kite,in a 10knot off-shore wind ,will take out a whole big bonnie, whereas a 650mmx650mm Kite may take a big Mackerel or small Bonnie,in the same breeze.

For what its worth,a distance of 250-300meters out, is deemed far enough by most Kite-fisherman, Local knowledge, like reefs,drop-offs etc will be a determining factor when you decide upon strategy.

Thanx man

Is was thinkin why do one need a long surf casting rod(14ft) for kite fishing. I'm sure a short 10 - 11ft heavy rod will do the job. So I take a KP/scaborough reel loaded with 0.60mm maxima is fine for the Kite. maybe upgrade to one of these babys sometime in near future.......not

$15000.00..... ish

Hannes a Trini 50 or Torium 50,or even those older Daiwa(cant remember if they were 450 or 950h) anything that holds enough line including backing. One would just spool it a bit differently ,on a Trinidad 50 one should go for maybe 600meters of ,50mm nylon on top,and then backing which would still give you more than a kilometer of line.In fact 600meters of Kingfisher 45 lbs braid and 600 m of .50mm just about fills her nicely. The reason for the longer nylon is mainly for perhaps putting it through a pulley/dropper and most of these have been designed with nylon in mind..

Anyway ,daai Daiwa lyk so iets, soos op hierdie foto, mens kan hierdie goed dan teiken sonder om senuweeagtig te wees oor wie die aas moet uit-roei in n paddle-ski.

Oh and another question. I sure one can use this system to drop the bait without the kite hanging for hours?
You can drop and retrieve and drop your mate's bait again etc etc,as long as the wind prevails.Charge the guys Dinglehopper -rates,lol

Watch this space china ... you ust watch .
when the westerly wind blows here I couldn't give a rats small dinges about bad fishing weather - Daai Stuk ass moet Net agter dir breakers land and it's bye bye stu-ball ........

I've been toying with this idea for a while now -ask kite , and it will also allow me to Get Jared along for some action .
I want it simple as pie - this whol tacking into the wind goeders- uh-uh - Man - Staan net verder op en hengel skuins !! lolol !!
so Ja- Month-end I'm ordering either a Muller or a high fly- I Can't Make up My Mind- the hi fly kite is Big boet , and it will pull the snot out of a 4 year-old's Nose , so I'm leaning that way . I'll weight one side down a bit and see if the bliksem turns by itself !! simple !! Remember .

Ja , and the dinglehopper is Great- but so Overpriced , regardless of how effective it is ( and it IS ) or that it is Not reliant on weather to take baits out , i Just cannot Justify spending R15k On a frikkin Baitboat damn-duiker gedagte . Etttttter .......

What a splendid idea,young man.

Def there's an offer from the country's most experienced assistant-kite-launching-and attempting-to catch-fish-in-a-dismal-Sardine-run-with-a-ou-ballie-technician.

Grab it ::S

At 21 they can still run to go and launch the kites, lol

Hannes101,this pic's for you, its the ELBE-Muscle-cracker, with mother KP,and Trini 50 on Shimano 80xhsa (or something like that) a very short, very strong ,very light rod, on which I have yet to catch anything. The pipe that the Trini-rod is in ,is a home-made 3mm angle Alu, welded to Alu 50mm pipe, and is nearly 1m long. Just for in-case.

Bait was "hanging" out through Roller-troller(AFTCO) release clip,in other words upon pickup,as all slack is taken out of fishing rod's line,it disengages from the clip, and you are on your own,so to speak.
