Was privileged to hook and land a very decent sized kob this past weekend. I was targeting a duckbill or big kob but was surprised by the size of this beut! Especially with the south wind and clearish water.
We fished just west of Mossel Bay on the low with pushing tide. Tackle used was a trini 30, Poseidon medium heavy, 0.50mm perline and 8/0 gamakatsu on an 80lb bite trace. Bait was a whole unskinned octopus leg.
I initially thought it to be a big smoothound shark because I didn’t feel any headshakes and just caught a little one on my other rod. Once I saw that dorsal sticking out I got the chills. The fight lasted about 15-20 minutes. We worked really quickly to get measurements and tag her in order to get her back asap. She took about 5minutes to regain full strength and swam of strongly.
She measured 159cm which puts her at 43.2kg or 95lb, and will hopefully live to reproduce many more young!
