A friend of mine told me about a secret spot he discovered on a stream somewhere between Nylstroom and Ellisras. Supposedly it was packed full of species and I had to come check it out.. well I hit the road to see if the spot lived up to its reputation...

Off the bat we spot some fish holding in the current. Suspecting they were yellowfish i flipped a fly over at them. Immediately they shot up to investigate but turned away at the last second. Flies were not working so I switched over to a size 0 spinner and was shortly on to my first ever Largescale Yellow!

:wfish It was one of the smaller ones, a male and he split milt all over.. Guess they are going to spawn soon.

We spotted Redeye Muddies in the clear water but the current was extreme where they were holding so there was no way we were going to be able to present anything to them..

There was a deeper pool nearby so I decided to havea throw in there... first cast and I'm on again, a more familiar species this time

That river has a LOT of vleis! Even swimming in the curent with the yellows!

After a bit of a scout around we got the lay of the land and decided on spots to target the smaller species. Dwarf, Vlei and Canary Kurper were prolific, and we actually had to try to avoid them to target the other species we were seeing.. namely Johnston's Topminnows aka lampoogies! I struggled for a long time but eventually got two good sized ones

in between I was seeing a couple stripy barbs, and eventually managed to get a couple to bite! ANOTHER new species for me, the beautiful Orangefin Barb

thanks guys... Kaptein ja exactly the same! caught them all on tanagos :)

serra I use a 3ft long bamboo twig with 3lb line tied onto the tip and a tiiiiiny hook (so small it doesnt have an eye)

Recently I've been going even smaller with my pieces of lure (far right).

The other micro lures (Lume Lures Spider, Sada Lures Small Curly & Sada Lures Small Ball) are for bigger small species.
