You can decide for youreself what you think is the fair thing to do.
Firstly theres gaffing ; leaves a hole in the body ,bleeds and I think should be totally uncomfortable if you are a shark.
The good part is it heals (proven on the recaptures we have had to date.
Then there is wrestling the shark out of the water;it leaves no marks ,no holes and there is no bleeding,But here is the bad part wrestling a shark out of the water with a big weight is most oftenly done by grabbing the shark by the tail, once you lift a fish above water there is no bouency for it pulling it by the tail is even worse.
Between the backbone segments is a cartlige with a jelly substance by pulling it you are stretching these vertebrae wich you tear apart , they then get infection in between this and it swells , leaving it impossible for them to swim propperly, they cant feed and end up dying.a fact that you can find out from a marine bioligist.
When you gaff and you know what you are doing you can do less harm in the long run.
There is pro's and con;s to both.
As a matter of interest some of the guy's premoting the idea of no gaffing on the fishing programs are the first guy's to shout for the gaff when fishing an INTERNATIONAL event , then they have no problem with gaffing.(I should know I have been guiding both sides) there is a safer limit to gaffing making sure you land the points, why then should it be any different fishing an international event as opposed to a program on the television? JUST ASKING!
