You don't get it wrong often, Neilg, but what your talking about here is more a Chinese approach than a German one.

Here's an interesting read:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quattro_(four_wheel_drive_system)

"Volkswagen Group has been developing four-wheel drive (4WD) systems almost since its inception during the Second World War."

Don't know. Seeing as Bosch are by far the world leader in ABS systems, I'd venture a guess and say probably some prototype vehicle in the Bosch labs? Heck, even Toyota used the first/second generation Bosch ABS systems in the 90's. Don't know if they still use it, though.

I play a game on my way to work when I get stuck in traffic and get bored. Count the cars with one of their brake lights not working. I will put money on it that VW tops the list 75% of the time.

A VW mechanic once told me to look out for the taillight problem in VW's - very true!!

VW's have a lot more niggles/problems than the buying public are are aware of - I am not such a big fan of VW. Time will tell with the Amarok I think it should be ok ???

Tow a boat/trailer with it and see how it goes, and what happens to the fuel consumption??

i looked at the vehicle at the Somerset Mall it is good looking I may be wrong but there is a slight hint of Toyota in the body, the interior looks awesome the only thing that worries me is that next to the gear shift there are a few to many buttons for the 4 x 4 in-gajement, I still like the stick instead of the buttons but yes it is an awesome vehicle

Went ont Autotrader last night and looked at a possible replacement for my Defender TD5. Hilux, Navara and Amarok were closely scrutinised - so thanks for the info above!

The conclusion I have drawn is that even though my Landy is a tank cross bred with a tractor - almost R400K for a new car is ludicrous even though I have the cash.

Best car is a paid off one :)

Cool comments.

considering the pro's and con's, my old Colt still runs very well on farm Diesel and hasn't given me an inch of problems.
Maybe, just buy a cheapie for commuting and beef up the colt some more - if I can find any space left to bolt more stuff on.

Had a look and test drive at the Huyndai IX35.
I shouldn't have taken the Mrs, she loves it.
2.4L petrol, 6 speed auto with tiptronic 4x4 gearbox.

Beutifullllllll, but soft.
The interior overflows with anything you want, dual climate control, bluetooth with USB sound system, blue backlight dash, leather everywhere, electrically adjusted driver seat (that was lekka) etc etc etc.
Very nice nudge bar with matching towbar (and steel bumber bar at the back)

18" mags with road tyres, not suited to serious 4x4, have doubts if it would suit Henties bay beaches and sand and I don't think Bridgestone ATX would suit it. Would definately not go mountaineering with it, not even SANI pass.

Good power, but not good on torque.
Nice family soft 4x4.
I can't see myself fishing out of the boot - too little space for a full day outing at Mile 108 and too much upholstery to get dirty.

My friend has a Hyundai, he says it tows the boat better than his Nissan Patrol.

I'm not a VW fan, doubt I will become one.

I just bought a Mitsu Challenger here in Oz. Loosely based on the Triton, which recently won 4x4 of the year over here. So far the vehicle is fantastic, 2.5 common rail TD, loads of towing power and superb for offroad adventures, whilst comfortable enough for the family. The Amarok is underpowered and heavy on fuel last I heard? Plus the Toareg has a very poor reputation here. Nearly bought a Kia Sorrento but it could not hold up to the Mitsu when it comes to offroading. And the 5 year warranty clenched the deal in the end...

Called a Pajero Sport here by us, for reasons I don't know I don't see many of them on the road, doesn't seems to be as popular?
