James, you have to use a reel and then decide.
My own personal rules -
Don't buy el cheapo stuff ! unless you want to be able to throw it away after some use, sometimes after 10 minutes !
Buddy up with an experienced guy who have some reels, have him help you get a 'feel' for the reels. You will in time develop a liking for a specific make.
I've had a host of reels, Penn's, Daiwa and some others, all probably have their market target, but the reels I enjoyed the most and will be my first choice is Ambassabor / Abu reels. Some models are crap, but the nice ones are outstanding ! You'll probably find the same with all makes.
Get to handle a few, it's the only way to get to know which is right for you.
