I have a 3.2m inflatable keel duck. It is about 3 months old and is made by Buccanneer.
The duck was made specifically for a bass fisherman who wanted to put a 30hp on this little boat. It has a thick fibreglass transom (pretty heavy and solid), and also has 2 stainless steel harnesses which hold the transom against the pontoons at the rear.
I purchased a 3 cylinder 30hp Yamaha which looked good but I think I was ripped off. I bought it from a dealer who said it is all fine. I had to spend then R1500 sorting out issues eg water in carbs and tuning in general. The motor seemed to run fine, then the last time more issues surfaced on the motor so I am ready to pack it in with this motor.
However, the most disturbing thing was the 30hp did not run well on the boat. It would cavitate easily. I put the motor right down (even removed the pin etc) and it improved, but basically I would have to wind the motor up slowly and even then, sometimes it would cavitate.
I had a another 3.2m duck before this one (Gemini) 20 years ago with a 15hp Yamaha and that thing ran like the bomb. Never any issues.
The 30hp is a short shaft and the boat is def short shaft, so I don't know what the issue could be.
I am looking at purchasing another 25-30hp Yamaha 2 cylinder for the boat but wonder if this will make any diff at all.
Have not checked for prop slip as yet on the hub, but I think it is cavitation?
