lately iv been watching FLUKE catch small sharks on light tackle from shore, it looks like a heck of alot of fun so iv decided to try it with my drop shot set up the 10 foot 6 Daiwa Exceler and the penn battle 4000, iv equiped the penn battle 4000 with 250m of 20lb Spider braid with a 80lb leader, i throw a 2ounce grabel and a small bait. What problems am i likely to face? iv already caught a proper raggy pup in the river on live stripie and a proper baby eagle ray that had a wing span of about 20cm and thats about it, the rod certainly has the pulling power but am i going to brake my rod or stuff the reel up? let me have your comments:ifishin

Shouldn't be a problem, biggest issues here being the reels drag and anti-reverse systems. A shark will quickly expose any weaknesses... Good luck, the pickup from a feisty grey or hammer on that tackle is unforgettable

The rods have immense pulling power but you need a decent reel as it works hard. The battle will be fine.

I've had some good sports,

86cm PCL grey, as Aqua said they are heaps of fun. That was on a 9' Air SH Soron STX60 and 10lb fireline.

132cm / 10kg Spotted Gully, these keep you on your toes with the light braid as they dive for every reef they can find.

I've also managed this 20kg Raggie on the Air & 10lb fireline and I was on my own so landing it makes you realise what a big advantage heavy tackle offers us. It's still way off my target for a raggie on the rod & reel but I first want to upgrade to 30lb braid before I hunt bigger sharks.

No way of specifically targeting small sharks and the goal is, as always, to catch the biggest shark the tackle can handle.

You can't throw a big bait on a small rod so the head of a 15cm mullet or a slightly smaller flapped mullet is not often going to attract a big shark. We also mostly fish areas where big sharks are seldom caught and where the terrain allows for a decent shark to be landed on 20 or 30lb braid and a 80lb braid leader.

I however love using the little 6'7" and 2000 reel in the river mouths and my goal is a 20kg+ raggie, 15kg+ smoothound and a 30kg diamond.

Here is a 111cm Sandshark I got while hoping for a Diamond.
