My mate and I decided to head to Blue Horizon Bay this past weekend to open our summer accounts. After an early rise (3 o'clock), we loaded up and headed down, via the Shell on Cape Road for liquid energy. We arrived at BHB and slowly unpacked as it was still dark when we got there(we didn't bring headlamps). Once packed we head to the water walking down the beach till we got to a spot with a big hole on the right and a massive gully to the left, looked like something you'd see on the Natal coast.
We set our gear down and got started rigging traces and tying baits. I threw a whole pillie, and my mate threw a mussel bait. The rain was a constant haze the entire morning and terribly cold. My rod went first with a hound of about 15-20kgs, didnt bother getting a measurement as with in 10 minutes the Trinidad 50 had a steel leader and 450lb double j hook swim trace and the shark was swimming beautifully out. I let it swim about 300-350m out where it chilled for about 4 hours.
While waiting for a big bite my mate landed a sandie, which was kept for throw baits later in the day.
Suddenly while i was trying to slide a mullet for a garrick or kob the trrinidad screamed into life rod bending something fierce. By the time i had gotten to the rod the fish had stopped swimming. After about 30 minutes and many expletives, thinking I had missed the fish, i started to reel in what i thought was the remains of a buggered hound. Occasionally it seemed my bait was trying to take line, me not wanting to waste time decided no line for you and held the spool, determined to get the hound out so it can become a throw bait.
After about half an hour of dragging the fish in I see in the white water a big dorsal fin and tail sticking out of the water. "oh F***" I have actually hooked the fish, after a bit of screaming to my mate, he rushed down the beach and grabbed the fish.
She measured 227cm
Using:
Super slim 80-100 430
Trinidad 50 (One of @Trophy's Reels)
Awashima 0.6 blue(I still can't believe how strong this line is, my word)
Below are the photos.
Shortly after this my mates rod goes down with another big fish after almost seeing the drum of 10500 slammer a couple times, this fish was also landed with even more foul language as the 2 of us struggled to stop the fish, (it was landed after one hell of a struggle). His fish measured 220cm, unfortunately I dont have photos of his fish on hand,
