years ago, there was a mold in pe that pushed out some nice little boats called 'baldwin cats'. i know that the mold has changed hands and i can't trace it anywhere. 1st prize would be to find a built boat for sale without motors. i know they lie around in pe, but how to find one. please let me know if anyone has one that they want to sell, or if you know anymore about the whereabouts of the mold.

shot.

Hi Gumboot, I have a Baldwin Cat. She goes by the name of Grim Reaper, previously called Besembek, owned by Willie de Wet, UPE marine Bio.
One was recently sold ( last 3 yrs maybe) by a mate in PE, called Crackerjack.
Will find out who bought it for you.

My avatar has a baldwin cat in the background, which I built from scratch.

Designed by Hookie Baldwin, who died in an Airoplane crash in 1990.

I ran that one, called Moggy, for 16 years and it took me everywhere, along the SA coast, while doing the National spearfishing circuit.

It is really a very capable boat and will do very well for a fly fisherman, also, because it floats in 300mm of water.

Hookie's son, Paul, works at the NMMU and stays in lorraine, but we do not really keep contact, so maybe he would know where the mould is.

His mother June Baldwin had the mould last and looking in the phone book, she still stays in the same house.

If you want to build one, I will assist you with most of the info and photos.

You need about 90 kg of resin, one roll of 450 chopstrand, 5 sheets of 6mm marine ply, 13 stringers of 5m x 25 x 30 meranti and 6 bulhead tops of 2m x 150 x 38 meranti.

Phone me on 0836555801 for more info.

Hows the ride at sea Moggy?? It looks more like a flatwater boat?

It is quite long and thin, so the ride is very good, better than a witblits.

She does not like doing high speed turns.

I have launched one through Umkomaas and Rocky bay.

That so called 5 meter butt cat is a baldwin cat with raised bulwarks.

You can see from the photo taken from the stern, because the hull goes in and then out.

Looks like the batmobile from the back.

thanks guys!!
ja, a buddy of mine is good friends with paul baldwin, he has contacted him and the mold has been sold with no record of who has it now. shame. it sounds like a really nice boat and the mold is probably lying somewhere with long grass all around it.

i was looking for a deck to put my 2 x 25hp mariners on that i bought at the end of 2008 to put on my witblits. i live in cape st. francis and like to catch yellow tail and geelbek, and the witblits does not like this lighthouse area when the sea is a bit on.

apparently the baldwin cat is really good on the sea, no broaching issues. it turns a bit flat, but no surf launching here means that doesn't really effect me.

i wonder how many great boat designs have faded away because they can't keep up with the big guys? this boat would be amazing for mozambique trips!!

thanks again for the info

oh ja, moggy... i have decided to sell my small motors and move to a bigger boat. so i won't be making one of these for now. i would still love to get my hands on the mold so i can make on one day. a boat for every day of the week is my motto!!! i wish.

i am trying to get myself a 21ft butt cat. bit of an up-grade, budget is tight though. i'll see what happens, maybe i'll be making a baldwin cat after all.

cheers.

Hi Gumboot, talking of Moz trips: quick story, my bro, his bokkie and I ran Grim Reaper ( Baldwin cat) out of Inhasorro, making a beeline for Bazaruto, but loaded like the Nyori-nyori Express. Being students on the budget, she was running on a single 40 Yammie twin, with an ancient British Seagull as backup ( in the hold, still wrapped in its 40y.o. oilskin).
We 'klapped' the shearpin on a coral head just off Carolina Is.
The old Seagull hadn't been flushed or run in 40 years;sticky green-grey carb sludge had bunged up the bowl, jets and ports!
We serviced it in the waves in 10 minutes flat, got it going and limped into a sheltered bay, and replaced the shear pin with a verandah bolt!

Got to Bazaruto and had a flawless flyfishing and spearing session for 3 weeks that will be told around the campfire till Uncle Remus eventually falls off his chair!

love it!!
old motors that won't die are the best thing ever!!
that boat looks really easy to tow, the butt that i use is small, but still a big thing to drag to mozambique. need a serious car for that.
hope to see some more photo's of these boats, they are very interesting.
