Yearly costs of a boat

Hi there again, does anyone have breakdown of the yearly costs to keep a boat legal and safe or maybe steer me to a website that explains the breakdown and any other maintenance cost's that I should keep in mind it will be a fiberglass boat something like a Kosi cat.

Yearly costs will be your COF, flares your trailers license. Then your buoyancy will expire every 10 years I think that will have to be either redone(Expensive) or a valid certificate will have to be issued.

Then there can be servicing costs on your motors. Servicing of your wheel bearings once a year is a really good idea.

I would suggest phoning a boat place and ask them what the above cost as I have seen COF being done for anything from R450 - R1100.

I saw a flare set for cat C is about R1500 for cat B its R2800

Flairs need to be replaced every 2 years at R1500.
At our club boat surveys are included in club fees of about R1200.
Trailer service about R1000 every 3-5 years.
Every 10 years buoyancy inspection at R1000 if foam good or R10000 if you replace foam.
Motor services can be expensive. Etechs for example has spark plugs that cost R750 each. 60 HP uses 3 and service intervals are 300 hours. The service iscomparable to 4 strokes and it can cost R3k to service a motor. Generally 2 strokes cost about half that but more frequent.

my boat is currently CAT R so no expensive Flares etc
However my smaller 4.2 Gemini had a single 60hp Johnson and that thing drank fuel like there is no tomorrow I think I was lucky to get 2km/litre with no wind and flat water conditions (vaal river) and about 2/3rds throttle.

My new 5.5m bigger duck now has 2 of those johnson 60hp 2 stroke motors so I think I will be alot worse off.
otherwise launching costs club fees etc can be a fairly large chunk of change.If you stay in a complex often they wont allow you to park your boat so factor in storage costs.

I should have kept my 3.6m infanta duck with the 8hp motor was a hell of a lot cheaper to run etc
I do all my own services and maintenance so that's not really an expense maybe 2k a year

I see you are in Benoni so towing will also be a large expense to get to the coast a few times a year.
Oh and dont forget all the friends your will make that will want a free ride. I think they are the biggest cost :shock:

1 x Battery Replacement R900
Trailer Board bulb replacements R100


For fuel, I use 50L for 25nm so in december, I used 250litres for 5 trips and 5 litres of 2 stroke oil.

Big thanks for the feedback guys you all have given me a much better idea of what is involved and what to think about when purchasing a boat, flip Im getting excited
