Alright guys,

As a lot of you would agree... Shad/Elf is considered by many as the backbone of South African rock and surf fishing. The humble shad is still a much sought after quarry to many seasonal fishermen.

The shad season is approaching fast, show us your favorite spoon for targeting them.

Picked up a Halco Twisty today, apparently shad cannot leave them alone...

These are the ones that work for me, both Toby lures one 1.5oz and the other 2 oz (same length different thickness) and one chrome the other bronze, chrome seems to have a better pickup rate

To be quite honest, I reckon shad are the least discriminating species in our waters that take spoon. So in the Cape - wobbly asymmetric spoons and KZN - symmetric casting spoons..

Also, for targeting really big shad there are other lures, besides spoons, not to be neglected and that often performs better than spoons. The GT Ice cream flat-face plug, Halco Roosta Popper and the CID slimbaits and shiversticks spring to mind.

I have got a few GT ice creams in my tackle box, I mainly used them to target Garrick. Never knew shad would take them, I was quite surprised to see bigger shad taking them on "Hier gaan ons alweer" last night. But as you said, bigger Shad.

Bought these two bad boys today, cant wait to use them!!!

The Abu is my alltime favorite spoon. Chuck the treble and split ring away ,put a single hook facing up with a quality split ring and you have a Shad magnet. I also got a nice Black Tip Kingie on the Abu

Do you also reckon the chrome is better than the bronze? Or does it mostly depend on the water conditions?

Hi Tank,

I don't have any experience on the Toby's but it seems that the silver/chrome spoons have a better pickup rate from the information I could find on the web...

I've not had much joy with the bronze Toby's.I also have a lot of luck with the Purple Onda Onda (only have 2 originals left) .Riekert is the man when it comes to R&S spinning though.
