I often ask the guys who I fish with if they'd prefer to catch one big fish or many small ones... The answer has varied... I believe its better to catch one big fish... What do you think?

Yesterday, caught my new PB of around 2.9kgs. Was an awesom feeling. Now i'm looking for a bigger fish. Caught it on a chart/white spinner at about 10:45am at Hazelmere, KZN. Was the only fish I got and started fishing at 6:30am, left at about 13:00

Well done,where is the pick?

Personally i prefer a mix, moving into a area hook a few mice move out stalk a monster, but i wont overstay my welcome if i dont get it to bite i'll keep the boat moving........i would say a good mix of smaller fish and maybe a 1,5-2kg for a days outing would be called a "good day at the office"!!!

Another option is to take your lightest outfit and to go out and test your skills, the last outings i took my 5ft6 rod smallest reel loaded with 8lb test, and hook a 1,5 or so believe me you'll have your hands full take my word for that, the biggest bonus with the thinner line is that you will catch more fish......maybe someone like rob or fishton, ryan, johan could light us up about the secrets making light tackle work for you...............................................................................................

I am having more success catching bigger and better fish on lighter tackle - scaled down some of my bass tackle lines to 6lb - Some guys will frown on this but it really blows my hair back.....

I'm still a bit "DOM" to look for a big one or small ones.
I take what ever bites. But i must admit somedays i like to stay busy and some days i wish for that monster to take my line for a ride..

Thanks

I agree about the light tackle... Got a 4'6" cherrywood with a tiny reel and 6lb braid. Any fish feels good on that setup.

Posted a pic, got dial up at home so thats probably why it didn't come. will try again.

i think for some of us we just enjoy fishing so catching fish big or small makes no difference...it more about the time on the water doing what you enjoy.

it also depends if you fish comps and which comps...classics you need to figue out how to catch that one big fish whereas CFC...BETTs etc you need to catch 5 good quality fish...so you need to set a target and work towards it.

for example a 5 fish 5 kg bag average would be a good start...if you want to be at the top in the money you need to target an 8 kg bag 5 fish...which is an average weight of 1.6 kg...problem is a 1.6 kg fish in a classic probably wouldnt even get you in the top 50.

100% classic i see you also fish on a float tube...you need to fish small dams like bells top dam...wild acres etc where you can get 5 fish between 2 and 3 kg fish in one outing...if its one big fish you are after there is a dam near shongweni which has one monster bass in it...problem is access and it is unsafe.

if it is big fish you are after you need to fish early morning...late afternoon and during the week...the big fish also come up around midday early afternoon...i have caught some of my bigger fish during this time.

Hi Cranky

I agree, it very much so depends on what the reason is that you are fishing. Personally, I just love being on the water and surrounded by nature. There's not much that can beat that, except the sound of a screaming reel...

I'm unfimilar with all 3 places you mentioned above, being bells top dam, wild acres or the dam near shongweni. Maybe you could PM me some extra details on these dams and your details so that we could make a trip. I usually fish alone or with a friend, but I got a 2 seater kayak if you up for it... Any liked minded people are welcome on all my trips... Also any other info on little dams in kzn, private or public. I find the big dams too daunting and because i'm a bit obsessive compulsive, I like to fish a venue throughly so small dams suite my fishing style...

Thanks for the info...

we have been fishing kickboat comps for about 4 years...the only rule we have is you gotta  have fun.

i will speak rory and get back to you.

we enter  the new hanover schools comp which had about 800+ anglers fishing this  year...and the prizes are awsesome...the puddlehoppers donated a kickboat this year which they raffled.

we assisst with fishing clinics for the children.

the puddlehoppers fish the satelite skins ever year.

we also have a comp against the south coast fellas.

we have even had  a comp against the sabass magazine team.

so we look forward to a challenge from gauteng::kznrls
