Hi fellow anglers!!

I suppose fishing is your passion as it is mine.Im from Cape Town and we went to visit in Mossel Bay by my mother-in-law for two weeks.I thought of treating my two sons for a deep sea fishing trip and asked my brother-in-law to arrange it with people he knows doing it"DEAP SEA ADVENTURES" boat named DREAMCATCHER"",two days later the four of us met up with the rest early morning, the owner seemed very nice and said it was going to be a beautiful day although a breeze blowing, the kids and myself were very excited, enough said......the launch was ok,once we were past the harbour i realised this was not going to be fun. When we got to wherever we had to fish the wind was already starting to blow and lots of whitehorses. The skipper seemed a bit under the influence and the guy helping i could smell when he helped me rig up the kids.We did not even start to fish and my sons got seasick ten minutes later myself and a few others on the boat.It was the longest morning ever and could not wait to get back on land.We got back much earlier as stated because of weather but i was more than happy and with not a single fish on the boat.My brother-in-law appologised and said he would arrange something again,i was not interested but did not want to be rude.He contacted the other company and we were told the next best day was Monday. The Monday we met again at the harbour by a boat called "SHARKY",beautiful weather(how do they know???).launch was good, the ride was good the assistance was good and boy did we have fun on the boat. The kids loved it,my one son got his first 3kg cob and the other son a big Miss Lucy, best for last i got my record cob of 12kg.What a great day i would like to thank GOFISH IN MOSSEL BAY,THEIR BOATS NAME IS SHARKY,MAKE SURE THE SKIPPER IS MANOLI!!!WHAT A SKIPPER!!WELL DONE GUYS!see you September!!!!!!

i dont whant to pic sides on this one. i dont know the ful story, but as far as i can gather on this one, is the fact that the skipper smelled like alcohol the only problem that i can see on your trip. even i get seasick sometimes. the weather can also change within a matter of minutes. so seasickness and the weather you cant blame on the skipper. sounds like he stayed out only as long as the weather was permitting. as i said , it would be interesting to know the full detailed story.my 2c

I drunk skipper or "babalas" is not a happy skipper in open sea.Even in bad weather a good skipper can control his boat in a way to look after his crew.

I have been out to sea on numerous occasions and I have seen the best of skippers still get sea sick, but they don't drink!!!!! (it is the LAW by the way)

As for weather at sea it can go from dead calm to choppy as hell in 5 minutes...

you see. now we can start to say that the man should have listened to the other boats and stayed at home. from this comment it sounds like he only chased the money. but as i said, the ful story and the conditions might have made me have an other opinion.

What a pitty that this had happened, irrespective of all other factors, the skippers state of sobriety, or even the smell of alcohol, are grounds sufficient for your unhappiness. Guys like this should be exposed! Glad however that your second trip was a success!

I also went out in December with 'Deep Sea Adverntures' Their tackle was old pen49's which did not work properly and vrot rods with eyes missing. We were given one box of sardines and told to use undersize fish for bait when that was finished. Every shark that was caught, regardless of size was beaten over the head and thrown back dead. Even after we asked him not to kill the sharks, he went on beating them. The worst was a thresher about half a meter long that we had to watch getting beaten to death and returned to the water dead.....very distasteful!

That would be the R 550-00 per person per day, all bait and tackle included on a 24 foot butt cat ?

Sharks a caught a a catch and release basis and are handled with care
All sharks and rays are handled with great respect and gently released after being brought to the boat. Hooks are removed and only quick degradable hooks are used on our expeditions and no stainless steel or galvanized gear.

I agree with your statement and the one of the beginning of the thread I whent thru them as well and found my self with a skipper smelling of booz and the other smelt like he didn't have a shower for a year, kept undersized cob and killed all that was not edible and edible regardless of size or bag limits.

Well said Mike!

On my boat the 2nd rule is NO BOOZE at sea.  None, nada...ziltch!!!!And if i`ve had a bit too much the previous evening, i won`t skipper. Plain and simple.

And as was previously stated it`s against the law.

But thats just on my boat for recreational fishing with my mates. This is very bad publicity for the charter. Would love to hear they have to say....(probably some thing like:beer!!!)

Glad to hear your 2nd trip was a success! Congrats on your PB cob!

Touchy subject, I run charters out of Durban.

Skipper or Crew boozing is completely unacceptable.

About the weather and seasickness.... These are things that the charter has no control over. The weather reports often get it wrong, and if you get seasick this is not the charters or the skippers fault. You cannot hold them responsible.

I have people getting sea sick even on nice days, the weather changes the weather report was wrong (And they aften are). On average 50% of my charters have someone that gets sea sick.

About no fish.... Those days happen to any charter and any skipper, there are far to many variables. I never gaurantee fish, only my best efforts. Thats why we call it fishing and not catching.

I can tell you that we have had awesome weather days with awesome catches and bad catches, bad days with good catches and no catches. I have had teh same clients on a good trip and a bad trip.

My boat has a good reputation and has a good catch rate, but this does not mean that we do not have bad days.

I can also tell you that if someone bad mouthed my business on an open forum because of weather and sea sickness he would have huge trouble coming his way.

I do not know all the facts here, but you need to be careful as you can damage someones business, and from what I can see the only issue is possibly drinking of which you have no evidence except your opinion. Techincally the guys can taken legal action against you. I am not knocking your post, or even that fact that you had a bad day, I am also not defending the charter. I am just pointing out some things.

There is another thing, predicting the weather and other boats going or not going out.

Often I am the only boat going out, that is because I was the only one with a charter that day.

I discuss the weather and the weather report with the customer and me together make a decision to go out. These guys decided to go.

Today is an excellent example.

Weather report said wind will die by 08h00 and the day will improve.

So instead of launching at my normal 05h00, we launched at 08h30, and as the report said the wind calmed down, and so we went out and the sea was lovely and flat. Made the run out to the fishing grounds, set the lines and got going.

The all of a sudden the SW began to blow and the sea went wild. We carried on but one guys was not feeling well and so we went back (I only book the boat, I do not do mixed bookings). The wind was howling and the rain poured, by 11h00 all was calm again.

I ended up charging the guy for a half day instead of a full day, but who was at fault. No-one. This is fishing.
