2.      [/b]The Sardine Run 2010[/b]

By all accounts Durban Beach has had a bumper Sardine season. Large numbers have been netted there, and yet the lower south coast has seen almost nothing. Maybe, this is why they are called “The Greatest Shoal on Earth”.

3.      [/b]Diving Tragedy[/b]

SAUFF have sent out a condolence message to all related to the tragic death of Andrew Payne at Vetches Pier several weeks ago. Perhaps the most important lesson to be learned is that our sport is dangerous. It has been described as “One of the most extreme sports on our planet”. Vetches Pier is regarded as the nursery for all spearfishermen and rightly so.

4.      [/b]Fish Poaching[/b]

As reported in the South Coast Herald, three ski-boat fishermen were apprehended at Port Edward with 244 fish. There were numerous yellow belly rock-cod and other illegal species amongst there catch. Two of them have been fined R80,000 of which R60,000 is suspended for 5 years. The other still has to be fined as he was caught fishing in an MPA as well for which the fine is R100,000.

5.      [/b]SAUFF Website[/b]

The SAUFF website is now up and running and will be updated with all the relevant info you will need. In September there were up to date posts about Worlds. We have also posted all the results from Nationals since 1990. You will also find the new fees for licenses. If you remember there was quite a bit of debate going on after it was decided that spearfishing fees would increase to over R500 for a license. However the new fees are now on the SAUFF website and are a reasonable R87.

6.      [/b]Worlds 2010 in Croatia[/b]

A report back from the South African Team:

[size=[font="Times New Roman"][/font]]

Conger Eel of approx 3kgs presenting a nice shot.[/i][/i]
The South African team of Craig Heslop (Cap), Ryan Burmester, Brent Borstlap, Angelo Spada and Andrew Henwood (Scout) attended the 27[suP]th[/suP] World Championships of Spearfishing hosted by Croatia on the Island of Mali Losinj from 14[suP]th[/suP] – 18[suP]th[/suP] September. Ryan and Brent arrived in Croatia on 28[suP]th[/suP] August with the rest of the team following a week later on 4[suP]th[/suP] September. The diving was very tough with few fish seen and most of the diving

in water deeper than 25m. The main target was Conger Eels which proved to

be more common than other fish and relatively resident, once the team figured

out what to look for we managed to find 2/3 congers a day in scouting on

average. Fish were hard to come by and the team found a few resident fish in

Scorpions and Fork Beards and the odd black tail (Sargo), Karinteen and Mullet

in the shallows, but these fish move around and could not be banked for the

Competition.

The water was unusually cold (14 degrees in thermocline) for this time of year and all teams were commenting on the absence of fish. We scouted on some amazing reef with dramatic drop-offs which must have held really good fish in years gone by but over fishing and gill netting has destroyed the fish stocks – it is quite depressing to dive 30m and do 100 dives in a day checking 100’s of rocks and only find 2 potential weighers – and that’s a good day!

Day 1 was off the Island of Cres, approx 64km squared area encompassing 2 smaller islands. Ryan had 8 congers lined up all fairly close to each other and managed to get 3 out on the day which put him in 11[suP]th[/suP] position. Day 1 was very tough with most competitors not weighing in a single fish. Our inexperience shooting congers definitely counted against us and we wasted a lot of time trying to get the fish out of their holes – being reefed up by an angry conger in 30m of water is not fun! We were lying 8[suP]th[/suP] after day 1 and very happy with our result.

[size=[font="Times New Roman"][/font]]

These cliffs in area 2 dropped straight into 30m of [/i]

water and Brent had a few fish marked in the waves [/i]

along the wall and on the drop-off.[/i]
Day 2 was the area bordering the Island of Unije and approx 2 nautical

miles seaward, an equally massive area as the Island was 14km long by

10km wide, diving 44km of coastline to scout – that’s equivalent to the

distance of Durban to Umkomaas and we had less than a week to scout

each area plus a reserve zone to check! We had managed to scout the

Western side of the Island and hadn’t touched the Eastern side. Brent

dived day 2 in place of Angelo and had a few good spots lined up with a

nice mixture of fish (Scorpions, Corbs and Fork Beards) and congers. A

strong Northerly wind came up at the start of the comp which turned the

sea on its head and made the shallows viable (you only get fish in the

shallows when there is white water and this proved to be our downfall…).

Brent did well with 1 conger and 2 forkbeard, the Scorpions and Corbs

had moved. Ryan unfortunately had sinus trouble and managed 1 conger,

he spent most of the comp descending backwards trying to get his sinuses to equalize which was a great pity as he may well have placed in the top 10 had he achieved a good catch on day 2. None of my spots had fish on them and I resorted to diving the shallows for most of the comp to take advantage of the white water, I eventually managed a weigher black tail and I was as proud of that fish as if I had shot a 10kg Brusher! Unfortunately for us the Slovenian and UK teams did well shooting mullet in the shallows. We did manage a TOP TEN finish for the first time in our history which is an excellent result.

The Croatians cleaned up with Daniel Gospic winning by a large margin and the Croatian team were almost double the runners up Italy, who shocked Spain into 3[suP]rd[/suP] place.

Andrew Henwood was a huge asset to the team - having one additional person to scout was invaluable and he gave us an extra top man on competition days which really helps with navigating and communication between diver and boat. Many thanks Andrew for your selfless support!

There is a really good report posted on below site with various pics
