Hi guys had some time for myself today and got busy making floats out of wood about 60 mm in diameter .These round floats weigh in at about 3 oz and i was thinking of using it for shad .Maybe a whole sardien with just the float ? Any ideas ?
It depends on the distance you goning to cast.I think that you would get more distance using a whole pilchard without a float.the pilli will float by itself and as you know when Elf is around it wont be long and you will be in bussines.Use the float only when you gonna take a pilli fillet or half of it.My 2c
When I was in Australia I noticed the following modifications to floats:
The float is drilled for the line lengthways and then perpindicularly with a wide hole to hold lokaas. (bread and pilchard oil is shoved into the hole and it creates a nice cloud of lok around the bait.
The float is covered in reflective /glitter tape and is used to hold a livebait underneath. (It is supposed to draw attention to the livey.) Think of a disco ball above your bait!)
I have seen a float here that is cut like a popper. the cupped side is faced toward the rod if using dead bait or toward the livey to allow for surface disturbance to lok fish to the live bait. (Think of those "birds" rigged in front of the trolling lure.)
Thanks for the info .Tried a few casts got about 60 meters
with just the float .The idea for a feeder ball is great
what about frozen minced up sardiens ?

Assuming the float weight is 3 0z. They should carry quite a bit. A small 0,5 oz sinker pegged just above the pilchard bait will help with casting. It should stop the float from "overtaking" the bait and causing that wrap around.
