Witsand Weekend Report

I made a trip the weekend but came home empty handed, I don't fish witsand often but I feel like going back it's an amazing place. We fished Friday and Saturday, lost two fish on the river on Saturday. Tried fishing the reef Saturday on the dropping tide with mud prawn got one nice bite but then went quiet and decided to head back to the river since nobody else around us were catching anything. Managed to catch a octopus on the reef cut of two legs and released it back in a spot nobody else could find it. For those that aren't aware, octopus do regrow a severed ligament, so please conserve our resource by releasing them and not killing them.

The conditions looked really good though so was surprised, only saw one 4 or 5 kg kob that came out on on sandprawn early morning around sunrise. We fished mainly the river near the slip and tried with live mullet, mud prawn, pilchard and octopus leg. Got two takes on the live bait but lost both, my line got caught in weeds on river bank. Think may have been kob or leerie. Alot of juvenile stump around took our prawn off but saw a huge grunter tailing close by. Tried spinning with a GT Ice cream got one or two chases from leerie but no solid takes, a near miss.

We decided to leave back to Cape Town early Sunday morning, didn't see anyone else catch anything from the river. Not too sure about the boats as we were fishing from the shore.

Anybody else fish witsand this weekend?

Thanks for the report, great to hear that there are some kob, grunter and garrick in the system.

I'm transporting a boat up to witsand this weekend (won't have much time to fish) but will wet a line and see if I can get lucky.

Cool please report back would like to know how it went _seal1_

I believe the grunter can be caught on chokka as well, pity didn't have fresh chokka on me. Lots of juvenile stump, taking the prawn bait off.

Was amazing to see that huge grunter tailing in the shallows tho :)

Hi Die Spook

Which dropshot lures do you use?

I have a few gulp jerkshads 5 inch and 7 inch, nuclear chicken and pearl white.

But haven't tried them out yet, so not sure of their success rate.
