In Luanda when the cold season arrives, fishing changes, usually you stop trolling and start bottom fishing, mainly with handline, but in some areas the water is less cold and fish concentrates there, when you find these areas and you manage to be there in the right time you can still troll and even hit the fishing jackpot.
Some of this areas are very close to the shore and it’s very difficult to get there, you must wait for the wright weather (no waves at all) and know you’re way around to avoid the rocks, danger is always around and the many wrecks of boats around are always reminding you of this.
Two weekends ago my friend Marco invited me to go fishing with him and his father, and told me that he thought the time was Right and the wave forecast for Saturday would allow us to get near some of this spots 40 miles north of Luanda.
I didn’t take many photos mainly because the action was too hot during all of the day and has you know trolling with 5 rods when the bite is hot it’s a lot of work, take all lines out of the water, one of the rods has a fish on, put all the lines back in the water fast, change lures this are not working anymore, and so on…
The first fish of the day was this corvina by Mr. Silva
We got Corvinas, Kobs, “Cubera†Snappers, Jack Crevalles and even a Grouper that day.
Three of the Corvinas were above the IGFA ALL Tackle record (by Mr. Silva some years ago), we got two of around 14Kg (one Mr. Silva one myself) and this one of 18.2 Kg that was submitted for the new IGFA ALL TACKLE record by Mr. Silva again.
On the way back to Luanda we agreed that the following weekend we would try to come back and bring Marcos son Pedro to try and beat some IGFA Junior records, mainly of kob, corvina and “Cubera†Snapper.

This last weekend on Sunday, has agreed, we went again to the same spot to try put 8 years old Pedro on some fish.
At the same spot we only got Barracudas and Jack Crevalles, and the fishing day was not exactly what we had expected.
After a couple of hours there I talked with Marco and we both decided to change spot to another place 10 miles south.
On arriving there the action changed, “Cubera†Snappers and corvinas started to bite.
We managed to put Pedro on some fish
In the end of the day Pedro got this 19.5 Kg “Cubera†Snapper that we think is going to be the new JUNIOR ALL TACKLE IGFA Record.
Tired but happy, look at Pedros face and his father smile from ear to ear
Although cold and unpredictable these were two good weekends of fishing.
