What an amazing day today.
It all started at 3.30am, car packed rods kitted out, bait in bait box. My fishing partner and I (UNCLE FRANK) or as we like to call him, THE LEGEND, travelled down from Pinetown to Winkelspruit KZN south coast to check and see if we can get some fresh sards and of course some shad and definetely a garrick or two. Ive been fishing Winkels quite often now for the last 2 months. Every outing has produced plenty shad and the odd garrick, just for fun!!!
This morning was completely diffrent, WHERE THE HECK WERE THE SHAD?????????????????????
Beaches and rocks full up, not 1 shad was pulled, but we did see 3 nice size garrick being taken, first 1 off Winkels rock, then the next 2 off the surf just left of Illovo rocks. These guys got them on livies, where they got the livies from, God only knows. It was amazing, not even 1 nibble or bite, NUTTING....
So, i then proceeded to throw my brand spanking new HDPE 6oz plug, boy this baby flew like a boeing, what a pleasure. As soon as i started with the plug, i had 4 other gents doing the same thing, awesome stuff... After about 50 casts and a very stiff arm, i only got 2 chases but no takes, this surface plug is the bomb!!!
We spotted 3 shoals of sards of Winkels about 100 to 150 meters out, few birds and some dolphin and shark activity, these silver suckers sure do move quickly.
Still, no Shad, they were probably chasing all the sards.
We then went to Kelso station, NO ACTION... Then Happy Wanderers, where my caravan is parked on site for the next 3 months, yes, i know, im very lucky, will be down there every single weekend, and maybe sneak in a seasion or 2 in the week, wife or no wife, lol... This is an awesome fishing spot, produces thick shad and garrick, also huge flat fish in the summer months. Ja, so after retireing to the Wrecked Hereon ( pub ) and drowning our sorrows, while we watched the blue sea in huge anticipation of the elusive sardine, we then decided to have a look at Greenpoint, which is just north of Scotties, sea was up and NE started getting violent, still no shad... We left there to then go to Warners and Winkels, OMG, there were hundreds of cars and people all over the beach, just waiting for these flippen sards, drives me crazy... We waited for 20 minutes, wind came up again, sea on its head, then on our way home popped in to check out Isipingo beach, first time there, looked like a good spot, saw loads of fisherman, not 1 shad. Things started looking up when a young indian lady offered me some samoosas, dam they were good.
Ja, so a terrible days fishing, dont know what happened to the shad today???
Will keep this updated, and be posting some regular reports from Happy Wanderers...
