Whoa-whoa-whoa.....why?

Advice please: i recently bought a 30Hp Evinrude [1998 model] which was last serviced by the dealer 18 months ago - and then......never used until yesterday.....at low revs it runs fine [say 5-7 knts], but the moment i throttle up [and keep it steady], the engine sounds likt it is being turned on and off [whoa - whoa - whoa etc] very quickly.

What could this be.....

1) fuel is new and mixture is right
2) new fuel lines and adapters/clips installed
3) fuel tank is like, 25 years old - no breather valve on top [so ran it half open]
4) I took the plugs out and cleaned them
5) i took the fuel filter apart and well.....it looks clean

suggestions? advice? it would be appreciated.

if u had not ran the carbs dry before parking it off for so long,U prob.have a build up of muck inyour carbs.I suggest you strip the carbs. and make sure u thorougly clean the JETS.Also check if the diaghram on the fuel pump is not damaged

i would also imagine an old engine like that was designed for leaded fuel are you running lrp or unleaded (sorry dont know jack about boats but i do know older engines like my car need lrp)

Just a q, why do older outboards need leaded petrol if it uses 2 stroke oil? As far as i know the lead in leaded petrol lupes the valves of a 4 stroke.

Hi,
As I understand, one issue is that apart from offering lubrication, the lead component helps to keep an engine running cooler. Therefore unleaded engines run slightly warmer and the clearances and tollerances are different.
Sure there are more reasons though.

You can run either - no problem.
The low and high speed coils are under the flywheel you need a multimeter to check and compare to the specs.
I would check out the fuel system first and put new plugs in before you do another thing, they are only R30 each and need to be changed quite often.
