Whilst I was competitively fishing I never realise

Whilst I was competitively fishing I never realised that I will ever get as much joy coaching kids or new people to the sport of bass fishing. Now there is very few things in live that give me as much pleasure as watching a kid or a new angler hooking into a bass. I have decided to share some advice/ideas with fathers to potentially make their kids enjoy the sport as much as they do. I will do this by telling you a littlet story about my grandchild.

Demetri joined me on the boat the first time when he was 2 years old, his mother/father/ouma all having a fit because I was taking this baby to spend a day on the boat with me. Before this I actually bought him one of these cheap fishing rods, R29 at Pick & Pay and I actually spend some time with him teaching him to cast this little rod. I also have put him on the boat and explained everything on the boat to him, at that age they have a lot of questions and all I did is answered his questions carefully and made sure he understood what I was saying, I even went as far as starting my boat at home with him on the boat. I did this to get him use to the noise of the motor, he was scared in the beginning.

Our first trip was to the Vaal River, on this trip I allowed him to stand next to me and cast his rod. Whilst I was catching some fish the fact that I caught some fish got this kid seriously excited and he tried his outmost to catch a fish, unfortunetly he did not catch a fish but he did start understanding what he needs to do. After this trip the kid drove me nuts, asking me all the time to teach him how to cast. I also promised him a decent rod and reel if he can cast 8 out of 10 into a hola hoop. Took him about a month to do that! Spending all his play time with a fishing rod in his hand.

My next trip with his new fishing rod, 5 Ft Eagle Claw spinning rod (Bought as a combo) and a Quantum spinning reel, was to Drie Koppies. The fish was seriously active and he managed to catch 2 fish both bigger than 800gm unfortunetly did not have a camera with me, BUT the joy in this kid was indescribable and he could not stop talking about it for months.

Above a photo of Demetri with a fish caught recently at Middleburg Dam, look at the sheer joy on the kid's face!

He will be 5 years old end of April, the skills that this kid have with a spinning rod blows me away everytime he goes fishing with me and he now teaches himself! We all know it can be tricky pitching a short distance with a spinning rod, this kid got it down to a tee! His accuracy is scary! He aslo decide for himself now what lure to use!

The next steps for him:

I am busy teaching him hard baits, jerk baits, spinner baits and crancks. I am also busy with boat safety, what to do if something happens to me on the boat! VERY IMPORTANT. And lastly I am teaching him to take photos of the fish!

His first photo! He will learn!

Remember:

Dont underestimate their abilities, Allow them to make decissions, Make sure you give him/her a decent rod & reel, Make them feel part of the fishing trip, Teach them safety on the boat, Answer all their questions properly, Don't get frustrated with them, Teach them trough playing, Always take photos of their fish, Always praise and motivate them even if they do not catch fish, Remember a day on the water is a LONG day for a kid garunteed when the boat is out the water they will be asleep!

Love them and enjoy your fishing trip with your kids!

Hennie, regardless of all the rubbish we hear about companies in the sporting business, it is people like you that grow and nurture the sport of fishing.

I am not a SABAA member, but having taken my mates kids out at Albert Falls on numerous ocassions, I realised it was something I enjoyed as much as they did so got involved skippering for the SABAA juniors. Some of these kids can flat out fish and are extremely talented.

My mates younger son was 7 years old when he caught his first +2kg fish off the boat with me. The scene that followed will stay with me forever. Ross was first in utter shock as he had never seen a fish that big and for the next few hours would not stop talking about how strong the fish was and how much fun it was.

Good on you Hennie and I hope Demetri continues to enjoy the sport for many years to come.

I myself had the joy of coaching three Juniors into the Junior National team, in fact I coached the first girl into the Junior National team! Believe me as much as they learned from me I learned from them, this does not only apply to kids I have taken new people to bass fishing and even watching them landing their first fish is an absolute pleasure!

Needless to say I am very proud of Demetri as my grandson, but there is so many opertunities for kids nowadays and all I am trying to do is to open oppertunities for him! He is also a Bulletjie Rugby mand and play's Bakers cricket and coaching him in golf, not sure where he will end up? At least he get's the exposure!

Lovely stuff guys. I have a good tip. Most kids / girlfriends battle setting the hook when fishing soft plastics. I witnessed this first hand when my girlfriend decided to start fishing BETT with me. She would get loads of takes but would loose 90% of the by either striking too late or not hard enough.... Solution.. Use circle hooks. It's amazing what a difference that makes!

Just my 2cents

Please give me more info on circle hook? size, make ect. Do you fish them with all plastics?

I use #1 Circle hook. Fish them mostley on dropshot with any soft plastic.  Check the image although that one is NOt a circle hook. You can rig any soft plastic as per the image. Flukes and senko's work very well. You can also rig your senko's wacky style.

Another advantage of circle hooks is that 95% of the fish will be hooked in the side of the mouth and not in the throat. What ever you do dont strike just real in and the hook will set itself. The only dissadvantage is that the hook has to be exposed so you do get caught up in reeds etc. If you are fishing in trees and your circle hook gets snagged do a full 360 deg circle arround the tree and it will release itself. I got hooked up about 7 times at inanda this passed weekend and did not have to break off once!

You can also rig them weightless, texas and carolina.

To tie the rig use a Palomar knot with the tag end about 30 cm longer. take the end piece and bring it back through the eye of the hook (in the pic above) from the top through the eye. This will ensure that the point side of the hook faces up and will snag less.

Thanks Ryan. One more thing. When fishing it carolina. Use a floating fluke or worm. This lifts the bait off the bottom and you get snagged less.

dude. I got the only fish in the river with you on that rig. Exept with a normal hook! open that tackle box and start writing my name on every 4th lure in it.... that should give me about 667 lures! haha

I know. I can definitely put the stamp of approval on that rig. But it has to be fished with that floating fluke. Otherwise I can't see it working.

BTW that stuff I was testing for them. Works like a bomb. I got another bottle from them for you. Just remind me to give it to you when I am down there
