which carp fishing line to get?

Hi All,

I'm looking to get new carp-line in the next for days and wondering what everyone's thought were on which their favourite line is and why? I don't use leaders, so I'm also wondering which strength I should get? 5.5kg? 6.8kg?

Many thanks in advance

firstly the line thickness:
For casting a absolute min will be 6.8kg/14lb but you might get a couple of break offs with it if your sinker/mielie bom is a bit big I will then suggest 8.1kg/18Lb you should be fine.

For me there is only one line and that is double X green for value for money/breaking strain/ abrasion resistance and thinness nothing compares. Just you cant see the line that easy as it blends into everything.

The rest of the double-X line is also fine like the brown is a bit thicker, the hi-vis yellow and orange and the Black all good just the green in my eyes is the best.

For better abrasion the Double-X Extreme Abrasion is the best of the best but it comes at a price.

For another make the Berkley Trilene Maxx is also pretty good used it once and had no complaints.

I fish from 5 lb line up to 55lb and all my reels have double x on them.

Hi TimJan

Thanks for the reply!

Will definitely take a look at the Double X. Wouldn't the Hi-Vis Orange/Yellow be too visible in the water? Every time this question arises, people have different opinions about it?

Many Thanks

Like you say everybody has their own opinion.
I use the green not because of the color but I honestly believe it is stronger than the other colors.maybe its just in my head.

But one of our country top fisherman Loutjie Louwies fishes with double x hi-vis yellow for all his carp fishing. He even uses the yellow for his leader just his hooklinks he uses Extreme Abrasion Camo. And trust me if there are 2 fish in a pond he will catch 3. So no in my opinion the color of the line does not matter.

I use Double X Extreme abrasion. I don't like leaders and extra knots so I have 18lb 0.33mm running straight through. I also get a comfortable 100m (measured) with minimum effort which is more than enough for me.

Till today I do not get the point of fishing a 5lb mainline and thicker leader...snag up and break a long leader off...why a lot of our dams are full of snags and old lines!

I am not the best fisherman, hence all my questions here.
But for me, the best normal line I have ever used till today is Berkley Trilene Maxx. I do not go below 6.8kg. My preferred line strength in this line is 9.1kg.
When I need to cast further, I just change the spool with one that has .10mm, 14.1kg Whiplash braid on. They cast like a dream compared to the 9.1kg mono line.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies and imput!

I had a look at the Double X hi vis yellow but I don't want to pay R330 for line 🙈 The Double X hi vis silver is half the price and seems to have the same specs? Is there much different between the two? And how is the casting? Also saw Sufix hi vis yellow (I know it's not meant for carp fishing) but a few guys at the shop had only positive things to say about it.. I just want a nice line that is reliable and casts well without breaking the bank..

Hi you say the Double X hi vis yellow was R330? THAT is indsane! Unless you were looking at the Extreme abration then it is still VERY expensive.

The normal hi abration should be about R100 at www.anglersmall.com its R90 for 18lb. Even the extreme hi vis 18 lb is R195.

Hope this helps.
