Where to fish for a day in Winter?

Hi All,

We are looking at taking the family for a day trip this coming Saturday but would like to know which venues you would recommend where it is not too far from Kempton Park and where we should be reasonably successful?

Hi

I have been to Rietvlei recently and it is relatively easy to blank there.

I was thinking of Bronhorstspruit but have not been there in a while so would like to know if the venue is good and where to sit.

Roodeplaat - I have never been there and do not know the dam at all. Could possibly be a good idea to try this dam. Is it safe and good for the family?

I will then go to Roodeplaat then.

It is in the nature reserve correct? And entrance ? Directions?

Any indication on where I should sit?

it is at the nature reserve. they have 2 entrances. you can take the one on the moloto road after the spar on your right. when driving on N1 towards Pietersburg, take the 2nd offramp after the N4/N1 interchange. this is i believe solamon mahlangu drive (old zambezi road.) go through toll gate and take the first robot right. when you are at the tswane china shopping mall turn left onto the moloto road and drive straight for about 6 or 7km. the entrance will be on your right hand side. other wise you can try hengelaarsvriend. also on that road. it is part of Roodeplaat. when at the spar on moloto turn in by spar and take a left on a small road leading to airport pets. just before the gravel road starts take a right and drive straight down on the cement road. take a left by the stone walls and a right after about 80 to 100 meters, drive down to the gravel road to the entrance.

can sit anywhere you like. just have any type of sweet or very fruity things handy like banana, honey or sugar floats with you. it works best. you can check my very first post on sealine here on what floats i used. also, skip on the super cast feed and get peanut feed. http://www.sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=98692&forum_id=80

I agree with you completely. The Vaaldam is my favourite. We have the majority of our club comps there but was looking for a venue close to home to practice.

Hi All,

Just some feedback on my fishing trip. Circumstances made it only possible to go to Bronkies on Saturday.

I started angling at approx 7AM and was very skeptical due to the spot as well as the fact that it was almost winter.

I was surprised though. I caught 15 full scale carp and the biggest was 3kg. The bite tempo was approx 40 - 50 mins.

I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed the day

Tell us more , where did you go cause last time I was there I just blanked for the weekend, was rather frustrated and really didn't see to much of chance at going back but 15 for a day is good going.

We went there early Saturday morning. We started fishing at about 7am. We sat at a spot where after you've just entered you go to the right. Where the river flows into the dam. The water is not very wide there but if you look carefully you will see that approx 60m out the stream can be seen. So what worked for me is to make sure that I cas at about 65m - 75m and ensure that my lines are in the flow of the water.

The bait that worked for me were as follows:
Feed: Boulyn
Bait: Almond SWD
Dip on ball: FX & Perdeby / Peach FX & Strawberry

My wife also caught 7 carp, and she cannot cast as far as I do but still caught on approx 50m.
