The purpose of the change in the rig is to provide some form of opportunity for the "big fish particularly" to have a greater opportunity to swim off without the extended line and more particularly, not have line wrap around its body.
other issues come into play and the design is more for the 40% (guestimate) of the time that burn off occur. This is certainly not a failproof solution, but makes sense to minimise adverse effect occuring during burn-off when the fish picks you up.
i have not had a burn off yet, but have noticed that leader line to ring is often badly chaffed from sharks and sinker is most times still there on its lighter 30lb line.
in april i pulled in a small raggie of 2m backwards as it had got twisted at least 6 times in leader line and took a while to revive it. again leader nicely chaffed
last year in moz my leader line broke after at least a 90mins pulling in a monstrous zambezi. we missed its tail when i got it to side and then it took off. i was too knackered to go round 2 with it so i basically locked drag only to have leader of 1mm part with siglon 0.40mm line still intact. so I assume that leader was wrapped around its body at various stages weakenig leader?
totally understand that likelyhood of a burn off is function of how much you fish and that maybe bronzies are different to zambezi/black tips so this is just my 2c on what could cause a burn off . . . . body wrapping the leader and this cuts main line?
What is recommended length of leaders to main line on slides?
