Where are bass in February?

This time of year has us in south Africa casting into the late weeks of summer. Unfortunately we’ve had the most unpredictable weather this season and this has caused a lot of confusion to where the bass are and where they’re not?

On the previous 2 weekends the following revealed itself: (this might be useful to homestead and benoni lake anglers as the hyacinth in our waters follow the same growth pattern)

Follow the kurpers and you’ll find the Bass!

06:00 am – 09:00 am
Very little activity in shallows, kurper and generally located in the the thick of the hyacinth waiting for the shallow bank waters to warm up….

09:00 – 11:30
Kurper move in to bank edge to feed, baby bass follow.

12:00 – as late as you can stay
Between hyacinth patches as the main body of water flows into inside hyacinth line, big bass enter and feed. Feeding also occurs on outside edge of grass beds.

4"-7" finesse and deep sticks on Wacky rig

Match the Hatch: Watermelon and watermelon red flake junior flukes. also Trima Natural series range

The home of the bass is in deep water. Small bass can be found in the shallows all day long. The big fish will only put themselves at risk (move to shallows) twice a day at most, unless there is a major change in the weather during the course of the day. Taken from the writings of Buck Perry - Spoonpluggers Founder.

all the report backs i have received...shallow water...frogs...at the back...watch for movement then cast to the spot...from the bett and now this past weekend satelite skins...when they dont take the lure off the top...just let it sink into the pockets...and wait a couple seconds.

True but I have had different experiences on different dams, I have have had big success with bigger fish casting a Spro or Sensation swimbait (kurper colour/shad) along these planty ridges on the outside, seems like the bigger fish are hanging out there regularly waiting for a little fish do dwell into deeper water by mistake.

At a friends farmdam you cast 5cm away from the bank and bring any plastic in any colour ontop of the grass line, drag it slowly and pause now and again, fish exploding onto it is amazing but you only hook 4 out of 10 as they miss easily, if you put that bait out 10cm further away from the side, dead, nothing.

I think you just got to spend time on the dam you fish and not give up, if there are bass they will bite eventually, no fish ever stops biting, this must encourage you to keep on trying, you will figure it out, I know I do, most of the time by mistake but I do, if you put in the time on the water you will come right, it's almost one of my favorate times of the year, Autumn, man one of these days the fish are going on a feading frenzy and that is where I want to be....

I have had great success with frogs in the east rand a short while ago. But hey, patterns change overnight, sometime hourly.
