Hi all

I would like to know when and where to use the Vaaldam III rig, more commonly known as the 'Moerstrop'?

I know it may be named after the Vaaldam for a reason, but most pros I know of use a sliding Rietvlei at the Vaaldam.

Thanks for your time,

Hi Jacques

I think you kind of answered yourself in the post when you refered to it as the "moerstrop". It is usually used when you need to reach greater distances than normaly, while obviously using larger sinkers/weights like P3 up to P7.

It is also used when targeting mudfish from time to time.

Hi Dewald

That actually makes sense, thanks! I'll keep that in mind when looking for muddies or distance.

Short Vaaldam trace for fishing for muddies and not always at distance, fish it on a taught line and the shy biuting fish will hook themselves against either the sinker or tigh line

I prefer to use a Heavy Rietvlei when casting a big weight but where there is mud/silt on the bottom then a Vaaldam with a bit of length will keep the baits above the mud when the sinker sinks into the mud

Cilliers on Vaaldam when the dam is a bit shallow and a long throw is made has mud up to 40cm deep and at times a Vaaldam/Moer/Boer or Paternoster Strop (all 3 different names for same trace) is used where there is 50-100cm between baits and weight. This keeps the baits up and out of the mud.

I understand now, thanks guys. If only I knew this earlier... My friend and I went to Klipdrift Dam (Lakeview) on 2 July this year and we didn't catch anything because of the slake in the water. Apparently a sliding Rietvlei trace with 10 cm hooklines has no chance in slake as thick as that.

Next time I'll know though, thanks guys!
