when do u throw redbait away? Sometimes its got a vrot, peppery smell, sometimes u pass out, sometimes its just perfect... Creamy yellow goodness..! What stage of decomposition do u prefer?
Ok, here is my theory on this. Redbait is vrot when you can’t get it on the hook.
Fish feed on what they know familiar smells and sight. Galjoen might be able to bite open sand redbait (the one that grows under the sand periodically) and glas redbait (don’t think it ever sees sunlight until it washes out), but it will not be able to bite open rock redbait (the one you see growing on rocks). Sand redbait and glas redbait produces fish at any stage but rock redbait needs to be well matured or very fresh to produce fish. In areas where there are crackers present rock redbait will produce good catches when fresh because the cracker is able to break open the hard redbait and the galjoen will be use to feeding on fresh redbait. Lots of redbait never reaches the shores after it has been dislodged after storms, this redbait lies at the bottom of gullies until it rots away and as it decompose,s the casing becomes more accessible to bottom dwelling organisms and galjoen… hence galjoen zone in on the smell of rotten redbait because that’s what they know.
